The 43rd district tournament will be played at Tates Creek High School between February 29th and March 4th.  The Bryan Station girls finished 10-0 in district competition and the Lafayette boys finished 8-0 against district foes.

Tuesday February 29th

Paul Dunbar (18-10) vs. Tates Creek (17-11) Boys

Dunbar coach Eddie Oakley started the following lineup:  6-2 Jr. Clay Tate, 6-0 Fr. Marcus Conner, 6-4 Sr. Alexious Osumenya, 5-10 Sr. Rayshon Williams, and 6-0 Jr. Clark Tatum.  Tates Creek coach Joe Pat Covington countered with 6-5 Sr. Will Thomas, 6-0 Sr. Jeff Lewis, 6-5 So. Patrick Gray, 6-0 Sr. Joe Warren, and 6-0 Sr. LaMarcus Baker.

Dunbar won a thriller in the opening round of the 43rd district tournament by defeating Tates Creek 58-56 in overtime.  Tates Creek led 27-18 at halftime as both teams were cold from the field.  The score was tied 38-all at the end of three periods.  Dunbar overcame a 52-44 deficit to tie the game 52-all at the end of regulation.  Dunbar took the lead in overtime to hang on for the win.  Dunbar shot 43 free throws for the game while Tates Creek only visited the charity stripe six times.

The victorious Dunbar squad was led by Alexious Osumenya with 17 points.  5-10 Sr. guard Rayshon Williams added 13.  Tates Creek was led by 6-0 Sr. LaMarcus Baker  with 24 points and Will Thomas added 15.

Lafayette (7-18) vs. Tates Creek (11-16) Girls

Lafayette coach Debbie Rose started the following lineup:  Sr. Lynne Birmingham, Sr. Theresa Fitzpatrick, Jr. Kimberly Owen, Jr. Allison Byars, and Jr. Savannah Boone.  Tates Creek coach Betsy Rains countered with Jr. Cassidy Raibert, Sr. Nicole Jackson, Jr. Shericka Smith, Jr. Renita Cowan, and Sr. Andrea Perez.

Tates Creek survived a scrappy Lafayette team to win by a score of 57-54.  Tates Creek led at halftime 32-24 but Lafayette chipped away at the lead to pull within 3, 46-43 at the end of the third quarter.  Lafayette tied the score 54-all in the final period but Andrea Perez hit some key free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Tates Creek was led by  5-10 Nicole Jackson with 23 points and 6 rebounds.   Lafayette was led by 5-11 Lynne Birmingham with 19 points, and Allison Byars added 15 points.

Paul Dunbar boys will now play Lafayette in a semifinal game and Tates Creek will meet Bryan Station in a girls semifinal matchup.

Wednesday March 1st

Henry Clay (17-10) vs. Paul Dunbar (14-13) Girls Semifinal

Henry Clay coach Scott Cromwell started the following lineup:   Sr. Emma Witt, Jr. Freddricka Embry, So. Katie Columbus, So. Nastassia Alcius, and Sr. Allison Bair.  Paul Dunbar coach Jud Brown countered with Jr. Brooke Johnson, So. Melanie Anderson, Sr. Ashley Roberts, Jr. Neeley Thomas, and Jr. Katie Boaz.

Dunbar raced out to a 35-19 lead at halftime.  Henry Clay closed to within 8, 53-45 with five minutes left in the game.  Dunbar then went on another run to close out the game with a 70-53 win.  Dunbar shot over 50% from the field and hit 83% of their free throw attempts.

The victors were led by 5-7 Neeley Thomas with 20 points.  Jr. Erin Greene came off the bench to add 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Henry Clay was led by 5-6 Nastassia Alcius with 20.  5-11 Freddricka Embry added 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Henry Clay (19-9) vs. Bryan Station (21-6) Boys Semifinal

Henry Clay coach Kirk Chiles started the following lineup:  6-2 Sr. Daryl Carden, 6-2 Jr. Rod Dunham, 6-5 So. Clay List, 5-10 Sr. Rod Cotton, and 6-0 Sr. Banks Douglass.  Bryan Station coach Bobby Washington countered with  6-1 Sr. Donte Tichenor, 6-0 Sr. Damond Washburn, 6-6 Jr. Terren Harbut, 5-8 Sr. Eddie Smith, and 5-10 Sr. D. J. Moberly.

Bryan Station managed to subdue Henry Clay tonight by a score of 69-60.  Bryan Station jumped out to a 21-9 first quarter lead but  Henry Clay fought back to only trail 31-27 at halftime.  Henry Clay battled Bryan Station throughout the second half but Bryan Station held on for the win.

Eddie Smith led Bryan Station with 16 points.  Terren Harbut added 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Damond Washburn and D. J. Moberly each added 13.  Henry Clay was led by 6-1 Sr. Shane Boyd and Rod Cotton with 11 each.  Rod Dunham and Banks Douglass added 10 each.

This concludes a fine season for Kirk Chiles and the Henry Clay Blue Devils who won 19 games against a very competitive schedule.  The season continues for Bobby Washington and the Bryan Station Defenders.  Bryan Station improves to 2-6 after a 3-20 campaign last season.

Paul Dunbar girls will now play the winner of the Bryan Station-Tates Creek game in the championship.  The Bryan Station boys will meet the winner of the Lafayette-Paul Dunbar game for the boys 43rd district title.

Thursday March 2nd

Paul Dunbar (19-10) vs. Lafayette (22-5) Boys Semifinal

Paul Dunbar coach Eddie Oakley started the following lineup:  6-2 Jr. Clay Tate, 6-0 Fr. Marcus Conner, 6-4 Sr. Alexious Osumenya, 5-10 Sr. Rayshon Williams, and 6-0 Jr. Clark Tatum.  Lafayette coach Don Adkins countered with 6-2 Jr. Robert Madison, 6-2 Sr. J. D. Dixon, 6-4 Sr. Rod Napier, 5-11 Jr. Quinton Roberts, and 6-1 Jr. Nick Everman.

Lafayette held on to subdue Dunbar by a score of  72-66.  Dunbar used their inside strength and athleticism to lead at halftime by a score of 39-33.  Osumenya and 6-3 Jr. Roderick Lyvers had 11 and 9 points respectively by the half.  Lafayette stormed back in the third quarter behind J. D. Dixon to take a 54-50 third quarter lead.  Lyvers fouled out with two minutes remaining and Lafayette clinging to a 64-63 lead. Lafayette managed to hold on for the victory.

Lafayette was led by their emotional leader J. D. Dixon with 27 points.  Dunbar was led by Osumenya with 17 points. Lyvers added 11 points and 11 rebounds.   5-10 Sr. Brannon Dunn chipped in with 14 points.

Tates Creek (12-16) vs. Bryan Station (25-1) Girls Semifinal

Tates Creek coach Betsy Rains started the following lineup:   Jr. Cassidy Raibert, Sr. Nicole Jackson, Jr. Shericka Smith, Jr. Renita Cowan, and Sr. Andrea Perez.  Bryan Station coach Jackie Williams countered with  Fr. Tracy Harbut, Sr. Tierra Martin, Sr. DeVonda Williams, So. Sharia Young, and Sr. Tamaka Clay.

This was supposed to be an automatic win for the No. 3 ranked team in the state Bryan Station, but someone forgot to tell Tates Creek.  Tates Creek battled to a 41-all tie with seven minutes left in the game.  Bryan Station then went on a 17-0 run to lead by 58-41. Bryan Station won the game by a score of 64-49.

Bryan Station was led by 5-7 guard Sharia Young Sr. with 17 points.  6-0 forward Tracy Harbut added 15 and 5-7 Sr. Tamaka Clay chipped in with 12 points.   Tates Creek was led by 5-10 Cassidy Raibert with 12 points.  5-7 Renita Cowan added 11 points.  5-10 Nicole Jackson and Shericka Smith each tallied 10.

The Lafayette boys will now play Bryan Station for the boys 43rd district championship while Paul Dunbar will play Bryan Station for the girls title.
 

Saturday March 4th

Paul Dunbar (15-13) vs. Bryan Station (26-1) Girls Championship

Paul Dunbar coach Jud Brown started the following lineup:   Jr. Brooke Johnson, So. Melanie Anderson, Sr. Ashley Roberts, Jr. Neeley Thomas, and Jr. Katie Boaz.   Bryan Station coach Jackie Williams countered with  Fr. Tracy Harbut, Sr. Tierra Martin, Sr. DeVonda Williams, So. Sharia Young, and Sr. Tamaka Clay.

Bryan Station defeated dunbar by a score of 63-42 to claim the 43rd District Championship.  Bryan Station led at all four quarter breaks: 17-12, 31-20, 43-32, and 63-42.  Bryan Station got a fine game from their 5-11 Sr, center DeVonda Williams with 19 points and 9 rebounds. 5-7 Tamaka Clay and 5-7 Sharia Young tallied 15 and 12 points respectively.  6-0 Tracy Harbut added 10 points.  Dunbar was led by 5-7 Neeley Thomas with 20 points including 12-12 from the free throw line.

Both teams should have a bright future.  Dunbar only has one senior, Ashley Roberts, on their roster and returns a lot of young talent.  Bryan Station loses four seniors including starters DeVonda Williams, Tamaka Clay, and Tierra Martin.  However, they return some outstanding young players including Sharia Young  and Tracy Harbut.

Bryan Station (22-6) vs. Lafayette (23-5) Boys Championship
 

Bryan Station coach Bobby Washington started the following lineup:  6-1 Sr. Donte Tichenor, 6-0 Sr. Damond Washburn, 6-6 Jr. Terren Harbut, 5-8 Sr. Eddie Smith, and 5-10 Sr. D. J. Moberly.  Lafayette coach Don Adkins countered with 6-2 Jr. Robert Madison, 6-2 Sr. J. D. Dixon, 6-4 Sr. Rod Napier, 5-11 Jr. Quinton Roberts, and 6-1 Jr. Nick Everman.

The gym was packed to capacity for this game and the fans got their money's worth. Lafayette survived a wild one to win by a score of  74-68.  Bryan Station dominated the first quarter to lead 22-13 at the end of the first period.  J. D. Dixon went to the bench at the 3:10 mark of the first quarter with two fouls and things looked bleak for Lafayette. Robert Madison lit up the scoreboard for Lafayette with 15 second quarter points to lead Lafayette to a 38-37 halftime advantage.  Bryan Station was led in the first half by Terren Harbut with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Lafayette was led by Robert Madison with 17 points.

The lead went back and forth in the third quarter with Lafayette clinging to a 55-54 lead at the end of the period.  Lafayette secured the lead for good in an emotionally charged fourth quarter which resulted in three technical fouls.  Lafayette was led by Madison with 26 points.  Bryan Station was led by Harbut with 29 points and 14 rebounds.  D. J. Moberly also added 25 points.
