This tournament is in its 16th year and is already rich in tradition.  Past champions have been Madison Central (1995-1996), Bryan Station (1996-1997), Scott County (1997-1998, 1998 - 1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002), Dixie Heights (2002-2003), Scott County (2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010).

 

Two years ago the Toyota Classic added a round-robin girls’ event that featured four teams.

 

This year’s field will consist of the following teams: Dixie Heights, Western, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Scott County, George Rogers Clark, Covington Catholic, Boyle County, and Christian County.  There will also be a girls’ round-robin event featuring the following teams: Lafayette, Scott County, Clay County, and Western.

 

Wednesday January 19th – Day No. 1

 

Lafayette  vs.  Scott County (Girls)

 

Lafayette coach Allison Tate Denton started the following lineup: 5-9 Jr. Taylor Mynear, 5-6 So. Kenyale Demus, 6-2 Sr. Shomari Kendrick, 5-5 Jr. Sarah Martin, and 5-2 Sr. Jariana Gillespie.  Scott County coach  Steve Helton countered with 5-11 Fr. Tereka Guyn, 5-7 Sr. Shauntae Jackson, 5-10 Sr. Alex McKenzie, 5-6 Fr. Audriana Christopher, and 5-10 Sr. Kristen Stainback.

 

Scott County raced out to a 26-12 first quarter lead on their way to a 72-51 victory over Lafayette.  This was a game of milestones for two of the Lady Cardinals tonight as Kristen Stainback scored her 2,000th career point and Alex McKenzie scored her 1,000th career points and grabbed her 1,000th career rebound.

 

Scott County shot 38.6% from the field including seven of 21 from the three point line.  The Lady Cardinals connected on 11 of 15 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 29 Lafayette turnovers.  Lafayette shot 41.3% from the field including one of 11 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Generals connected on 12 of 22 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored nine points off 14 Scott County turnovers.

 

Kristen Stainback led Scott County with 26 points including four three point baskets.  Audriana Christopher added 14 points and five assists.  5-6 Jr. Ally Conrad chipped in with nine points on three three point baskets.  5-11 Fr. Iman Guy recorded seven points and 12 rebounds.

 

Jariana Gillespie led Lafayette with 16 points and five assists.  Shomari Kendrick added nine points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Dixie Heights  vs.  Western

Western defeated Dixie Heights by a score of 59-53.  This was a game of surges as Dixie Heights led 20-7 after the first quarter.  Western rallied to lead 27-26 at halftime.  Western outscored Dixie Heights 32-27 in the second half.  There were six lead changes and seven ties in the game.

 

Western shot 44.4% from the field including four of 13 from the three point line.  The Warriors connected on seven of 10 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 11 Dixie Heights turnovers.  Dixie Heights shot 37% from the field including five of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on eight of 13 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 10 Western turnovers.

 

Ryan Taylor led Western with 22 points and 16 rebounds.  Michael Toby added 11 points including three three point baskets.

 

Brandon Hatton led Dixie Heights with 23 points including four three point baskets and pulled down eight rebounds.  Zeke Pike added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Scott County outscored PLD 23-10 in the second quarter on their way to a 72-54 victory.  Scott County scored 28 points off 22 PLD turnovers and held a 29-14 advantage in bench scoring.

 

Scott County shot 40.6% from the field including six of 23 from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on 10 of 14 free throws and pulled down 47 rebounds.  PLD shot 31.6% from the field including one of eight from beyond the arc.  The Bulldogs connected on 17 of 27 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 16 Scott County turnovers.

 

Tamron Manning led Scott County with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  5-11 Fr. Trent Gilbert added 12 points including three three point baskets.  Tanner Shotwell and Isaiah Ivey each scored 10 points and pulled down six and five points respectively.

 

Sean Lamanna led PLD with 12 points and six rebounds.  Lamont Johnson added 11 points and 10 rebounds.  William Gary also scored 11 points.

Dixie Heights shot a sizzling 69.6% from the field in a 81-67 victory over Paul Laurence Dunbar.  Dixie Heights shot 69.6% from the field including four of eight from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on eight of 13 from the free throw line, pulled down 24 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 22 PLD turnovers.  PLD shot 42.4% from the field including seven of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Bulldogs connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 22 Dixie Heights turnovers.

 

Brandon Hatton led Dixie Heights with 27  points.  Hatton was 11 0f 14 from the field including two of three from the three point line, and three of three from the free throw line.  Zeke Pike added 21 points and six rebounds.  Pike was nine of 10 from the field and three of four from the free throw line.  Parker Stansberry chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds.  Matt Trammel recorded nine points, 10 assists, and five steals.

 

William Gary led PLD with 19 points.  Clay Coyle added 17 points including three three point baskets.  Lamont Johnson chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Zach Herrin also reached double figures with 10 points.

Clay County defeated Lafayette by a score of 48-36.  Clay County shot 51.4% from the field including zero of one from the three point line.  The Lady Tigers connected on 12 of 18 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 14 Lafayette turnovers.  Lafayette shot 25% from the field including four of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Generals connected on eight of 11 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 13 Clay County turnovers.

 

Whitney Belle Jackson led Clay County with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Morgan Chestnut also scored 16 points and pulled down five rebounds.

 

Shomari Kendrick led Lafayette with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Jariana Gillespie added seven points.

George Rogers Clark defeated Covington Catholic by a score of 73-46.  Note: Vinny Zollo left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury.  GRC shot 58.5% from the field including five of nine from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on six of 11 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 17 Covington Catholic turnovers.  Covington Catholic shot 37% from the field including one of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on five of 16 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored seven points off 10 GRC turnovers.

 

Robbie Stenzel led GRC with 19 points.  Stenzel was seven of nine from the field including three of four from the three point line, and two of two from the free throw line.  Corey Rogers added 17 points and eight rebounds.  Jaylen Daniel chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds.  6-7 Sr. Travis Purvis recorded 10 points and five rebounds.

 

Jake Thelen led Covington Catholic with 16 points and six rebounds.  Alex Connelly added 13 points and seven rebounds.

Christian County raced out to a 51-24 halftime lead on their way to a 75-59 victory over Boyle county.  Christian County shot 48.3% from the field including seven of 20 from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on 10 of 12 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 34 points off 25 Boyle County turnovers.  Boyle County shot 46.7% from the field including 10 of 22 from beyond the arc.  The Rebels connected on seven of eight free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 16 Christian County turnovers.

 

Anthony Hickey led Christian County with 29 points, four assists, and six steals in 17:26 minutes of playing time.  Hickey was 11 of 16 from the field including two of three from beyond the arc, and five of six from the free throw line.  Donovan Kates added 17 points.  Bubba Tandy recorded nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

 

Micah Satterly led Boyle County with 26 points including six three point baskets.  Satterly was seven of 11 from the field including six of eight from the three point line, and six of six from the free throw line.  Michael Arnett added 10 points and five rebounds.

Scott County raced out to a 46-25 halftime lead on their way to a 98-47 victory over Western.  Scott County scored 43 points off 40 Western turnovers and held a 52-14 advantage in bench scoring.  The Lady Cardinals starters only played between 10:47 to 15:57 minutes.

 

Scott County shot 44.9% from the field including eight of 26 from the three point line.  The Lady Cardinals connected on 20 of 37 free throws and pulled down 50 rebounds.  Western shot 33.3% from the field including zero of six from beyond the arc.  The Lady Warriors connected on 19 of 31 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 19 Scott County turnovers.

 

5-7 Fr. Danielle DeFoor led Scott County with 22 points including five three point baskets.  Kristen Stainback added 16 points and six steals.  Tereka Guyn  recorded 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals.  Shauntae Jackson also reached double figures with 10 points.

 

LaQuisha Jones led Western with 10 points.  Carmen Lowe added nine points.  5-11 Jr. Cynthia Doyle chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.  Lelanda Matthews pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.

Covington Catholic defeated Boyle County by a score of 76-50.  Covington Catholic shot 66.7% from the field including one of four from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on three of four free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 29 points off 19 Boyle County turnovers.  Boyle County shot 36.4% from the field including four of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Rebels connected on 14 of 21 free throws, pulled down 15 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 20 Covington Catholic turnovers

 

Jake Thelen led Covington Catholic with 36 points and six rebounds.  Thelen was 17 of 19 from the field and two of four from the free throw line.  Alex Connelly added 10 points.

 

Will Dunn led Boyle County with 17 points.  6-2 Jr. Kyle Rice and Micah Satterly added 10 and nine points respectively.

Western defeated Scott County 83-80 in an overtime thriller.  The score was tied eight times and there were six lead changes.  Scott County lost three players (Quin Richardson, Tanner Shotwell, and Tamron Manning) via the foul route while Western lost two players (Michael Toby and LeMichael Harris).

 

Western shot 40.9% from the field including two of six from the three point line.  The Warriors connected on 27 of 37 free throws, pulled down 53 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 13 Scott County turnovers.  Scott County shot 36.8% from the field including three of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Cardinals connected on 27 of 36 free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 19 Western turnovers.

 

Ryan Taylor led Western with 37 points including 13 of 16 free throws, and pulled down 20 rebounds and blocked six shots.  Michael Toby added 17 points.

 

Isaiah Ivey led Scott County with 22 points including 18 of 22 free throws, and pulled down seven rebounds.  Tamron Manning added 21 points and 10 rebounds.  6-0 Sr. Trey Relford chipped in with 10 points.

George Rogers Clark raced out to a 28-15 first quarter lead on their way to a 71-57 victory over Christian County.  GRC shot 56.8% from the field including nine of 16 from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on 12 of 24 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored four points off eight Christian County turnovers.  Christian County shot 36.2% from the field including nine of 33 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on six of 12 free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored nine points off 14 GRC turnovers.

 

Robbie Stenzel led GRC with 29 points and 12 rebounds.  Stenzel was 10 of 17 from the field including six of 10 from the three point line, and three of seven from the free throw line.  Travis Purvis added 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Corey Rogers chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.

 

6-1 Sr. Veontae Lewis led Christian County with 17 points including four three point baskets and pulled down six rebounds.  Donovan Kates added 15 points and nine rebounds.  Anthony Hickey chipped in with 12 points including three three point baskets and dished out seven assists.

Lafayette shot 32.3% from the field including six of 15 from the three point line.  The Lady Generals connected on 12 of 19 free throws, pulled down 41 rebounds, and held a 23-8 advantage in bench scoring.  Western shot 22.9% from the field including one of 11 from beyond the arc.  Western missed both their free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored four points off 17 Lafayette turnovers.

 

Sarah Martin led Lafayette with 14 points including four three point baskets and dished out five assists.  Jariana Gillespie added eight points, five assists, and eight steals.  5-10 Sr. Mackenzie Graham also scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds.  Shomari Kendrick recorded seven points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

 

Carmen Lowe led Western with 11 points.  Lelanda Matthews pulled down eight rebounds.  5-11 Jr. Cynthia Doyle added four points and seven rebounds.

Paul Laurence Dunbar scored 33 points off 20 Boyle County turnovers in a 66-50 victory.  PLD shot 42.6% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.  The Bulldogs connected on 18 of 24 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and held a 10-2 advantage in second chance points.  Boyle County shot 34% from the field including five of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Rebels connected on 11 of 17 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored seven points off 19 PLD turnovers.

 

William Gary led PLD with 18 points and five assists.  Lamont Johnson added 17 points and eight rebounds.  Clay Coyle recorded 10 points including two three point baskets.

 

Micah Satterly led Boyle County with 17 points including two three point baskets.  Michael Arnett added 10 points.

Dixie Heights led 35-14 at halftime on their way to a 62-41 victory over Covington Catholic.  Dixie Heights shot 41.4% from the field including five of 10 from the three point line.  The Colonels connected on nine of 14 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 27 points off 20 Covington Catholic turnovers.  Covington Catholic shot 32% from the field including two of 15 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on seven of 18 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 17 Dixie Heights turnovers.

 

Brandon Hatton led Dixie Heights with 16 points including two three point baskets and pulled down five rebounds.  Parker Stansberry added 12 points and Matt Trammel recorded nine points and seven rebounds.

 

Jake Thelen led Covington Catholic with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Conner Maschinot added six points.

Scott County defeated Christian County by a score of 73-59.  Scott County shot 54.8% from the field including six of 13 from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on 21 of 23 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 Christian County turnovers.  Christian County shot 39.3% from the field including six of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Colonels connected on five of 10 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 18 Scott County turnovers.

 

Tanner Shotwell led Scott County with 27 points and 12 rebounds.  Shotwell was eight of 14 from the field including three of four from the three point line, and eight of eight from the free throw line.  Isaiah Ivey and Trey Relford added 15 and 11 points respectively.  Tamron Manning recorded eight points and eight rebounds.

 

Anthony Hickey led Christian County with 28 points including four three point baskets.  Nick Riley added 12 points and Veontae Lewis chipped in with 10 points.

The score was tied 23-23 at halftime and Scott County pulled away for a 50-43 victory over Clay County.  Clay County encountered foul problems tonight as starting guards Alisha Mitchell and Kayla Smith fouled out.  Scott County’s pressure defense allowed the Lady Cardinals to score some key transition baskets.

 

Scott County shot 33.3% from the field including five of 15 from the three point line.  The Lady Cardinals connected on 15 of 18 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 20 Clay County turnovers.  Clay County shot 44.2% from the field including one of seven from beyond the arc.  The Lady Tigers connected on four of nine free throws, pulled down 31 rebounds, and scored eight points off 13 Scott County turnovers.

 

Kristen Stainback led Scott County with 17 points including 10 of 12 from the free throw line.  Audriana Christopher added 13 points including two three point baskets.  Alex McKenzie scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

 

Whitney Belle Jackson led Clay County with 20 points and 14 rebounds.  Jackson was nine of 12 from the field and two of two from the free throw line.  Kayla Smith added nine points and five assists.

George Rogers Clark led 42-26 at halftime but had to survive a furious rally by Western to earn a 63-58 victory. Corey Rogers hit some key baskets down the stretch to ensure the victory. George Rogers Clark shot 44.4% from the field including five of 13 from the three point line.  The Cardinals connected on 10 of 11 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 11 points off seven Western turnovers.  Western shot 41.5% from the field including four of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Warriors missed their only free throw, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 17 points off eight George Rogers Clark turnovers.

 

Travis Purvis led GRC with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Purvis was six of nine from the field including one of two from beyond the arc, and six of seven from the free throw line.  Corey Rogers added 16 points.  Jaylen Daniel chipped in with 12 points.  Robbie Stenzel recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

 

 

Ryan Taylor led Western with 23 points including three three point baskets and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Michael Toby and 5-6 So. Jamel Clay added 10 and nine points respectively.  Julian Lurry recorded eight points and nine rebounds.
