The 37th annual Girls Louisville Invitational is sponsored by Republic Bank/Coca-Cola and will feature 12 teams from Louisville and four invited teams from different areas of the state.  The 2009 event was cancelled due to weather conditions.  The first day will feature Assumption, Central, Ballard, Eastern, Sacred Heart, Fern Creek, Butler, and Jeffersontown.  Christian Academy of Louisville, duPont Manual, Mercy, and Bullitt East will play the first round winners on the second day.  North Hardin, Franklin County, Highlands, and Nelson County will make an appearance in the quarterfinals.  The semifinals and finals were scheduled to be played on Saturday January 30th but was moved to Sunday January 31st because of the weather and road conditions.

 

Tuesday January 26th

 

Central  (11-5)  vs.  Assumption  (11-7)

 

Central coach Ashley Butler started the following lineup: 5-9 So. Khalisha Henderson, 5-6 Sr. Krystl Coleman, 5-9 Sr. Diamond Duncan, 5-8 Jr. Brianna Averette, and 5-5 Sr. Shaneal Brents.  Assumption coach Ron Ferch countered with 6-0 Sr. Molly Ernst, 5-8 Fr. Katie Friedrich, 5-10 So. Morgan Foley, 5-9 Jr. Maggie Hartlage, and 5-7 Fr. Dee Dee Sliter.

 

Assumption outscored Central 15-5 in the second quarter on their way to a 61-42 victory over Central.  Assumption held a 23-2 advantage in bench scoring and a 12-0 advantage in three point points.

 

Assumption shot 47.8% from the field including four of seven from the three point line.  The Rockets connected on 13 of 23 free throws, pulled down 43 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 12 Central turnovers.  Central shot 30.2% from the field including zero of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Jackets connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 17 Assumption turnovers.

 

5-9 Sr. Sara Minogue led Assumption with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Molly Ernst added 13 points inckuding three three point baskets.  Dee Dee Sliter chipped in with 12 points.  Morgan Foley recorded seven points and eight rebounds.

 

Brianna Averette led Central with 16 points and six steals.  Shaneal Brents added 12 points and Krystl Coleman chipped in with nine points.

Ballard outscored Eastern 23-14 in the third quarter in a 59-46 victory.  Ballard shot 33.9% from the field including two of nine from the three point line.  The Lady Bruins connected on 19 of 32 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored 27 points off 29 Eastern turnovers.  Eastern shot 36.4% from the field including one of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Eagles connected on 13 of 23 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 24 points off 26 Ballard turnovers.

 

Larissa Stafford led Ballard with 18 points.  Jaylan Bodiford added 14 points and 16 rebounds.  Nicole Heitz chipped in with 10 points.

 

Asia Nichols led Eastern with 16 points.  Lauren Murphy added 10 points.

Sacred Heart scored 27 points off 29 Fern Creek turnovers in a 51-49 victory over Fern Creek.  Fern Creek led 37-32 after three quarters but Sacred Heart rallied for the victory.  Sacred Heart only shot 23.2% from the field including three of 15 from the three point line.  The Valkyries connected on 22 of 28 free throws and pulled down 32 rebounds.  Fern Creek shot 46.3% from the field including three of seven from beyond the arc.  The Lady Tigers connected on eight of 13 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 14 Sacred Heart turnovers.

 

Morgan Clemons led the victors with 26 points and nine rebounds.

 

Asia Grigsby led Fern Creek with 19 points including two three point baskets.  Teonia McCune recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots.

Butler defeated Jeffersontown by a score of 62-44.  Butler shot 45.8% from the field including one of eight from the three point line.  The Bearettes connected on seven of 11 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 25 Jeffersontown turnovers.  Jeffersontown shot 41.7% from the field including three of six from beyond the arc.  They connected on 11 of 20 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 15 Butler turnovers.

 

Aareon Smith led Butler with 13 points and six rebounds.  5-6 So. MacKenzie Martinez added 12 points.  Heather Wheat chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.  Moriah Corey recorded six points and nine rebounds.

Ballard led 19-16 at halftime but Christian Academy of Louisville rallied in the second half for a 46-37  victory.  CAL shot 38.5% from the field including three of eight from the three point line.  The Lady Centurions connected on 13 of 18 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 12 Ballard turnovers.  Ballard shot 25.9% from the field including two of 12 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Bruins connected on seven of 17 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 16 CAL turnovers.

 

Allison Karst led CAL with 27 points.  Karst was nine of 12 from the field including two of two from the three point line and seven of nine from the free throw line.  China Dow added 10 points and nine rebounds.  Antonita Slaughter recorded seven points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.

 

Nicole Heitz led Ballard with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Larissa Stafford also recorded 11 points.  Jaylan Bodiford added eight points, 14 rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Mecheal Guess led Manual with 17 points and eight rebounds.  5-7 So. Leasia Wright added 12 points.  Kara Wright and April Wilson chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The game between Manual and North Hardin was cancelled.  It was scheduled to go at 4:00 PM .  North Hardin was unable to procure transportation due to pending inclement weather situation.  Manual will advance to the semifinals.

 

Franklin County  (16-4)  vs.  Sacred Heart Academy  (12-9)  (Quarterfinal)

 

 

Franklin County coach Joey Thacker started the following lineup: 5-10 Sr. Chelsea Craig, 5-6 Jr. Lacinda Hack, 5-10 So. Sacred Heart raced out to a 19-8 lead in the second quarter but Franklin County rallied to capture a 56-52 overtime victory.  Franklin County shot 46.3% from the field including one of three from the three point line.  The Lady Flyers connected on 17 of 25 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 14 Sacred Heart turnovers.  Sacred Heart shot 33.3% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Valkyries connected on 11 of 13 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 19 Franklin County turnovers.

 

Ashli Mayes led Franklin County with 25 points and nine rebounds.  Andrea Howard added 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.  Chelsea Craig chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds.

 

Maddie Peabody led Sacred Heart with 20 points and five assists.  Morgan Clemons added 12 points and nine rebounds.  5-7 Sr. Leah Storch scored 11 points including three three point baskets.

Christian Academy of Louisville led 32-22 at halftime and outscored highlands 14-3 in the third quarter in a 57-37 victory.  CAL shot 50% from the field including four of 13 from the three point line.  The Lady Centurions connected  on seven of seven free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 18 Highlands turnovers.  Highlands shot 32.6% from the field including four of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Bluebirds connected on five of eight free throws, pulled down 21 rebounds, and scored six points off 19 CAL turnovers.

 

Allison Karst led CAL with 16 points, six rebounds, and five steals.  Antonita Slaughter added 14 points including two three point baskets and 10 rebounds.  China Dow recorded 12 points and seven rebounds.

Mercy Academy defeated Nelson County by a score of 44-22.  Mercy shot 32% from the field including four of 14 from the three point line.  The Jaguars connected on eight of 16 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 27 Nelson County turnovers.  Nelson County shot 21.6% from the field including two of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Cards connected on four of eight free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored nine points off 10 Mercy turnovers.

 

5-10 So. Christine Roush led Mercy with 11 points and six rebounds.  Therese Montano and Malisa Cruz each scored seven points and Cruz pulled down six rebounds.

Mercy led 55-29 after three quarters in a 69-47 victory over Christian Academy of Louisville.  Mercy scored 22 points off 20 CAL turnovers.  Mercy shot 49% from the field including three of 10 from the three point line.  The Jaguars connected on 18 of 23 free throws and pulled down 35 rebounds.  CAL shot 36.8% from the field including two of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Centurions connected on 17 of 26 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 16 Mercy turnovers.

 

Juliann Miller led Mercy with 13 points and five assists.  Malisa Cruz added 12 points and five rebounds.  5-10 So. Christine Roush chipped in with 11 points.

Mercy Academy coach Mark Evans started the following lineup: 5-8 Sr. Malisa Cruz, 5-8 Jr. Emily Goetz, 5-9 Sr. Therese Montano, 5-9 Sr. Ellen Sholtes, and 5-8 Jr. Juliann Miller.  duPont Manual coach Stacy Pendleton countered with 5-10 Jr. Mecheal Guess, 5-10 So. Kara Wright, 6-2 Sr. Zakiyah Martin, 5-5 Jr. Raven Hester, and 5-7 So. April Wilson.

 

Mercy claimed the LIT Championship with a hard fought 57-56 victory over Manual.  Mercy shot 50% from the field including two of six from the three point line.  The Jaguars connected on 13 of 21 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored six points off 14 Manual turnovers.  Manual shot 32.3% from the field including three of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Crimsons connected on 13 of 16 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 20 Mercy turnovers.

 

Therese Montano led Mercy with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  Juliann Miller added 11 points.  Malisa Cruz chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.  5-5 Jr. Lauren Faris also scored eight points.

 

Mecheal Guess led Manual with 12 points.  Zakiyah Martin added 10 points.  6-1 Fr. Kayla Styles recorded nine points and seven rebounds.  April Wilson chipped in with six points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
