Monday February 22nd

 

Lexington Catholic  (14-13)  vs.  Paul Dunbar  (19-6)  (Girls)

 

Lexington Catholic coach Tony Talbott started the following lineup: 5-11 So. Alex Botkin, 5-9 Fr. Octavia Wilson, 5-11 So. Liz Walton, 5-5 Sr. Meghan Cawood, and 5-6 Sr. Anna Gayle Hardy.  Paul Dunbar coach Michael Sowers countered with 5-8 Sr. Courtney Haney, 5-4 Sr. Kristi McIntosh, 6-0 Sr. Ebony Rowe, 5-5 Jr. Olivia Grabmayer, and 5-4 Jr. Christin Haney.

 

Paul Dunbar’s Ebony Rowe hit one of two free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining on the clock to give Dunbar a 46-45 victory over Lexington Catholic.  The Lady Knights had one last opportunity but missed the shot.  Dunbar led 34-25 after three quarters but Lexington Catholic rallied to tie the score at 45-45.  Dunbar turned the ball over 28 times but Lexington Catholic was only a cold eight of 18 from the free throw line.

 

Dunbar shot 39% from the field including two of nine from the three point line.  The Lady Bulldogs connected on 12 of 18 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored eight points off 12 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 29.3% from the field including three of 11 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Knights connected on eight of 18 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 28 Dunbar turnovers.

 

Ebony Rowe led Dunbar with 26 points, 24 rebounds, five blocked shots, and three steals.  Kristi McIntosh added eight points including two three point baskets.

 

5-9 Sr. Lexi Mullikin led Lexington Catholic with 16 points including two three point baskets.  Mullikin was especially impressive during LexCath’s comeback effort in the final quarter when she tallied nine points.  Liz Walton added eight points and six rebounds.

Lexington Christian Academy coach Tommy Houston started the following lineup:  6-7 Sr. Will Evans, 6-3 Sr. Evan Stephens, 6-4 Sr. Charlie Gullett, 5-7 Sr. Will Kindred, and 6-0 So. Taylor Barnette.  Tates Creek coach Wayne Breeden countered with 6-3 Jr. Marcellus Barksdale, 6-2 Sr. Justin Daughtery, 6-4 Sr. Ezra Garner, 5-11 So. Darius Gibson, and 6-2 Jr. Ryan Fucci.

 

Tates Creek defeated Lexington Christian Academy 68-54.  Tates Creek shot 57.5% from the field including three of eight from the three point line.  The Commodores connected on 19 of 30 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 11 LCA turnovers.  LCA shot 46.2% from the field including five of 18 from beyond the arc.  The Eagles connected on one of three free throws, pulled down 19 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 13 Tates Creek turnovers.

 

Ryan Fucci led Tates Creek with 25 points and eight rebounds.  Fucci was 10 of 12 from the free throw line.  Marcellus Barksdale added 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Ezra Garner chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

 

6-1 Sr. Branden Burdette led LCA with 16 points on eight of 10 from the field.  Taylor Barnette added 14 points including two three point baskets.  Will Evans recorded nine points and eight rebounds.

Lafayette  (11-15)  vs.  Lexington Christian Academy  (19-6)  (Girls)

 

Lafayette coach Allison Denton started the following lineup: 5-8 Sr. Lisa Hack, 5-4 Sr. Jameka Gillespie, 6-0 Sr. Morgan Walker, 5-3 Jr. Jariana Gillespie, and 5-7 Sr. Ali Ross.  Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands connected on 6-2 Sr. Sarah Beth Barnette, 5-11 So. Olivia Eastham, 5-11 Jr. Kelli Rinehart, 5-5 Jr. Rachel Cox, and 5-5 So. Kelli Mitchuson.

 

Lexington Christian Academy defeated Lafayette by a score of 57-50.  Lafayette led 25-14 in the second quarter but LCA closed out the quarter with an 11-0 run to tie the score 25-25 at halftime.  LCA led 42-35 at the end of three quarters and held on down the stretch for the victory.

 

Lexington Christian shot 52.4% from the field including two of 13 from the three point line.  The Lady Eagles connected on 11 of 18 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 15 Lafayette turnovers.  Lafayette shot 36.8% from the field including eight of 23 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Generals did not attempt any free throws tonight, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 15 LCA turnovers.

 

Sarah Beth Barnette led LCA with 23 points and nine rebounds.  Kelli Rinehart added 14 points and seven rebounds.  Rachel Cox chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.

 

Lisa Hack led Lafayette with 18 points including four three point baskets and nine rebounds.  Morgan Walker added eight points and nine rebounds.  5-9 Jr. MacKenzie Graham and Ali Ross also recorded eight points each.

Lexington Catholic coach Brandon Salsman started the following lineup:  6-4 Jr. Taylor Martin, 6-3 Jr. Scott Schuette, 6-8 Sr. Tanner Peurach, 6-0 Jr. Seth Beckham, and 6-1 So. Jaylen Beckham.  Lafayette coach Greg Coldiron countered with 6-2 Sr. Domonique Hagans, 6-4 Jr. Tanner Napier, 6-7 8th grader Jackson Davis, 6-1 Jr. D’Angelo Yarbrough, and 6-1 Sr. Michael Walker.

 

Lafayette outscored Lexington Catholic 21-14 in the final quarter to earn a 62-56 victory.  The game was close the entire way with Lafayette pulling away in the closing minutes of the game.  Both teams were plagued with fouls tonight with Lexington Catholic’s Jaylen Beckham, Taylor Martin, and Tanner Peurach finishing the game with four fouls and Lafayette’s D’Angelo Yarbrough fouled out and John Burton finished the game with four fouls.

 

Lafayette shot 43.4% from the field including four of 10 from the three point line.  The Generals connected on 12 of 20 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 26 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 40.9% from the field including four of 17 from beyond the arc.  The Knights connected on 16 of 25 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 19 Lafayette turnovers.

 

Domonique Hagans led Lafayette with 23 points and nine rebounds.  D’Angelo Yarbrough added 12 points including two three point baskets.  Michael Walker also reached double figures with 10 points including two three point baskets.

 

Jaylen Beckham led Lexington Catholic with 22 points.  Seth Beckham added 11 points and five rebounds.  Scott Schuette chipped in with nine points on three three point baskets.

Paul Dunbar coach Michael Sowers started the following lineup: 5-8 Sr. Courtney Haney, 5-4 Sr. Kristi McIntosh, 6-0 Sr. Ebony Rowe, 5-5 Jr. Olivia Grabmayer, and 5-4 Jr. Christin Haney.  Tates Creek coach Justin Cheatham countered with 5-8 Sr. Lizza Jonas, 5-6 Fr. Dominique Etling-Turner, 5-7 Fr. Katie Pippen, 5-1 Fr. Lexi Whaley, and 5-4 Fr. Oney Harrison.

 

Lizza Jonas hit a field goal to give Tates Creek a 54-52 lead and an insurance free throw to give her team a 55-52 upset victory over Paul Dunbar.  It was truly the agony and ectasy of sports as one of the leading candidates for Miss Basketball Ebony Rowe ended her career as a Lady Bulldog.  Tates Creek, on the other hand claimed a big victory and insure themselves of a regional tournament berth, a feat of no small significance as they lost their top inside threat 6-1 So. Peyton Hisel earlier in the season with an ACL injury.

 

Tates Creek shot 45.7% from the field including five of 16 from the three point line.  The Lady Commodores connected on eight of 17 free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 13 Dunbar turnovers.  Dunbar shot 35.1% from the field including four of 14 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Bulldogs connected on eight of 12 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 12 Tates Creek turnovers.

 

Oney Harrison led Tates Creek with 21 points including two three point baskets.  Lizza Jonas added 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Lexi Whaley chipped in with nine points.

 

Ebony Rowe led Dunbar with 19 points and 14 rebounds.  Kristi McIntosh added 11 points including three three point baskets.

Paul Jones, and 5-10 Jr. Clay Coyle.

 

Tates Creek defeated Paul Dunbar by a score of 86-53.  Tates Creek shot 59.3% from the field including five of seven from the three point line.  The Commodores connected on 17 of 25 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 18 Paul Dunbar turnovers.  Paul Dunbar shot 37.5% from the field including three of 13 from beyond the arc.  The Bulldogs connected on 14 of 22 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored two points off eight Tates Creek turnovers,

 

Ryan Fucci led Tates Creek with 26 points including three three point baskets,  Fucci was 10 of 14 from the field including three of three from beyond the arc and three of four from the free throw line.  Marcellus Barksdale added 19 points on eight of eight from the field and three of six from the free throw line.  Ezra Garner recorded seven points and seven rebounds.

 

5-11 Fr. William Gary led Dunbar with 17 points.  Lamont Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds.  Terrell Farrell chipped in with nine points.

Lexington Christian Academy  (20-6)  vs.  Tates Creek  (16-11)  (Girls)  (Championship)

Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands started the following lineup: 6-2 Sr. Sarah Beth Barnette, 5-11 So. Olivia Eastham, 5-11 Jr. Kelli Rinehart, 5-5 Jr. Rachel Cox, and 5-5 So. Kelli Mitchuson.  Tates Creek coach Justin Cheatham countered with 5-8 Sr. Lizza Jonas, 5-6 Fr. Dominique Etling-Turner, 5-7 Fr. Katie Pippen, 5-1 Fr. Lexi Whaley, and 5-7 So. Bri Durden.

 

Lexington Christian Academy’s Sarah Beth Barnette hit a field goal in the closing seconds to give LCA a 53-52 victory over Tates Creek.  Tates Creek had one final opportunity but missed a shot at the buzzer.  Tates Creek led 48-35 in the third quarter but LCA closed the quarter on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 48-48 entering the final quarter.  Tates Creek could not hit their free throws down the stretch which led to their downfall.

 

Sarah Beth Barnette led LCA with 17 points including three three point baskets and pulled down 11 rebounds.  Kelli Rinehart added 12 points and six rebounds.  5-7 8th grader Katelin Bundy chipped in with 10 points.  Rachel Cox recorded nine points on three three point baskets and dished out seven assists.

 

Lizza Jonas led Tates Creek with 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.  Dominique Etling-Turner added 12 points including two three point baskets and pulled down six rebounds.  Katie Pippen chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.  Tates Creek was also hampered with another injury as 5-4 Fr. Oney Harrison missed tonight’s game.

Tates Creek pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Lafayette by a score of 59-48.  Tates Creek shot 44.7% from the field including two of five from beyond the arc.  The Commodores connected on 23 of 27 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored six points off six Lafayette turnovers.  Lafayette shot 31.7% from the field including four of 21 from beyond the arc.  The Generals connected on four of six free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 20 Tates Creek turnovers.

 

Ryan Fucci led Tates Creek with 19 points including 10 of 12 from the free throw line.  6-5 Sr. Miles Potter came up big tonight with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Potter was four of five from the field and six of six from the free throw line.  Marcellus Barksdale recorded eight points and 14 rebounds.

 

Domonique Hagans led Lafayette with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  5-11 Sr. John Burton added 11 points and Michael Walker chipped in with 10 points including two three point baskets.

Conclusion:

 

Congratulations to the Tates Creek Boys and the Lexington Christian Academy Girls for capturing their respective district titles.  It was also a treat two see two of the top candidates for Miss Basketball Sarah Beth Barnette (Lexington Christian Academy) and Ebony Rowe (Paul Dunbar) play here this week.  Also congratulations to Tates Creek’s Lizza Jonas on an excellent tournament.
