The Shirley Allen Cunningham Jr. Family Foundation

“The Shirley Allen Cunningham Jr. Family Foundation (SACFF) was established to enhance the total academic, athletic, and leadership abilities of area youth.  Activities at the SACFF started well over 15 years ago with the sponsorship of several basketball teams for boys.  Over the years, girls’ basketball teams were added.  It is common that participants start with a team at approximately seven years of age and continue team participation through middle school.  Repeatedly, the teams have ranked among the top 25 in the nation for Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Leagues.  A lifetime dream and milestone for the Foundation was achieved in late 2002 with the opening of the 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility to house the SACFF.

The Central Kentucky Warriors AAU club has been formed to provide Central Kentucky boys with above average basketball skills, a chance to play on a team with other competitive players, and against other competitive teams.  We are members of the national AAU and Kentucky AAU organizations.”

Mission Statement

“The mission of the Central Kentucky Warriors is to provide the youth of the Lexington and Central Kentucky community with the opportunity to learn and enjoy basketball at the highest competitive level.  Our program is designed to develop skillful play, promote good sportsmanship, team spirit, and team loyalty.  The Central Kentucky Warriors demand a high degree of ethical conduct by all its coaches, players, volunteers, and parents so that it provides a positive example for the community, the opponents, and it’s participants, in our players’ growth and development into adulthood.

It is the further mission of the Central Kentucky Warriors to cooperate and participate with other youth basketball organizations currently operating youth basketball programs including but not limited to AAU, AACC, BCI, USTOC, and YBOA.”

The preceding information and mission statement are quoted from the 2007 Warrior National Prep event program.

This event will feature eight quality teams with each team scheduled to play five games over a two-day period.  The teams scheduled to participate are:  Central Kentucky Warriors, South Florida Wildcats, Houston Select, Louisville Legends, Lexington Blaze, DC Assault, Indy Ice, and Northern Kentucky Tarheels.

There was a tremendous amount of talent on display this weekend with several excellent teams who could challenge for national honors.  The Central Kentucky Warriors have a very talented team from top to bottom.  Christen Cunningham displayed the ability to nail the long-range jumper and score off the dribble.  Dakari Johnson and Mustafa Diaw are a formidable inside duo and the Warriors have talented wing players in Trey Grundy and Jordan Green.  The Warriors subsitute liberally with each player capable of making major contributions.

The talent level was not limited to the Warriors as each team had an impressive bevy of talented players.  While the parents were proud of their sons’ achievements, they were equally proud of their academic achievements.

This was an excellent, well-run event and hopefully this will become an annual event.
