I have attempted to give a brief recap of each game in this tournament. I apologize in advance for any misspelled names or errors in stats as I hurriedly transcribed the statistics from the scoresheets. This report is meant to be an overview of the tournament for entertainment purposes and not an instrument for ascertaining official statistics or precise individual records.
Congratulations to the Scott County Cardinals for capturing both the Junior Varsity and Varsity championships. Several teams and players had excellent performances this week. It is difficult to evaluate summer basketball for a variety of reasons. Key players will be missing for varied reasons. Coaches will be evaluating their own players to replace graduated seniors. However, other teams will start the process of attempting to fine-tune teams expected to make a run for the coveted high school championship in March. Often teams will not display the same defensive intensity during the summer campaigns and it is often used to keep players in shape over the summer.
However, I enjoy summer basketball for a variety of reasons. Simply put, I enjoy the high school game and always enjoy attempting to identify players who will contribute or star at the varsity level. Summer ball is an important tool for coaches to develop players, install new concepts, and begin the long process of building their teams for regular season play.
Congratulations to Clint Stepp (June Buchanan) for his long-range marksmanship. Stepp was credited with 30 three point baskets, which tied the mark of 30 set by Russell Farmer (Clay County) in 1987.
A special thanks to the Kentucky Basketball Academy family for the hospitality extended me during this event. Also a special thanks to the coaches who provided me with information about their teams.
Ron Harrison’s reports on this and other basketball events appear on http://www.kyprephoops.com.
