The Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic is a statewide basketball tournament for schools with an enrollment of 425 students or less in grades 9-12. 119 girls’ teams will participate in this year’s tournament.
The All “A” Classic included four girls teams in 1991. The 1992 version expanded to include eight girls teams and in 1993 the tournament again expanded to include a full complement of 16 teams. Winners crowned to date are 1991 Cumberland, 1992 Cumberland, 1993 Nicholas County, 1994 Louisville Holy Cross, 1995 Monroe County, 1996 Louisville Holy Cross, 1997 Hazard, 1998 Hazard, 1999 Bishop Brossart, 2000 Somerset, 2001 Jackson County, 2002 Jackson County, 2003 Clinton County, 2004 Clinton County, 2005 Christian Academy of Louisville, and 2006 Monroe County.
Teams competing for this year’s championship are St. Mary, Lyon County, Owensboro Catholic, Cumberland County, Bardstown, Louisville Holy Cross, Kentucky Country Day, Carroll County, Newport Central Catholic, Paris, Lexington Christian Academy, Somerset, Harlan, Hazard, Paintsville, and Raceland.
Wednesday, January 31st - Day 1
Game No. 1 Harlan (11-6) (Region 13) vs. Newport Central Catholic (12-7) (Region 9)
Harlan coach Chuck Mitchell started the following lineup: 5-10 So. Chassidy Lawson, 5-7 Sr. Caroline Huff, 5-11 Jr. Courtney Bell, 5-4 Sr. Charlene McMillen, and 5-11 So. Alexandria Allison. Newport Central Catholic coach Christie McDonald countered with 5-9 So. Mariah Cutter, 5-8 Sr. Shannon Klei, 6-0 Jr. Whitney Cundiff, 5-5 Jr. Savannah Simms, and 5-6 Fr. Courtney Sandfoss.
Newport Central Catholic utilized a balanced scoring attack today in a 64-31 victory over Harlan. 10 of the NCC players cracked the scoring column with seven players scoring six or more points.
Newport Central Catholic shot 37.1% from the field including five of 14 from the three point line. The Thoroughbreds connected on seven of 14 free throws, pulled down 52 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 27 Harlan turnovers. Harlan shot 20.9% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc. The Lady Dragons connected on 11 of 20 from the free throw line, grabbed 27 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 17 NCC turnovers.
Courtney Sandfoss led the victors with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Savannah Simms added nine points. Shannon Klei, Whitney Cundiff, and 5-3 So. Janie Giesler each recorded eight points. Chassidy Lawson led Harlan with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Alexandria Allison added six points.

Bardstown held a commanding 49-28 edge in rebounds in a 55-45 victory over Louisville Holy Cross. Bardstown led 40-22 after three quarters and withstood a rally by Holy Cross in the final quarter to gain the victory.
Bardstown shot 39% from the field including three of five from the three point line. The Lady Tigers connected on 20 of 34 free throws, pulled down 49 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 23 Holy Cross turnovers. Louisville Holy Cross shot 23.6% from the field including four of 17 from beyond the arc. The Lady Cougars connected on 15 of 20 free throws, grabbed 28 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 33 Bardstown turnovers.
Candyce Lewis led Bardstown with 16 points and nine rebounds. Shanissa Douglas and 5-6 Sr. Nikki Boone added 11 and 10 points respectively. Daziah Kimberland recorded eight points and 12 rebounds. Megan Davis led Louisville Holy Cross with 14 points. Elizabeth Schuler and Staci Floyd added nine points each.

Paris parlayed a stingy defense and a 43-27 advantage in rebounds to a 46-41 victory over Paintsville. Paris shot 37.5% from the field including only one of eight from the three point line. The Ladyhounds connected on only nine of 25 free throws. Paintsville shot 30.2% from the field including six of 13 from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers connected on nine of 13 free throws.
Nakita Jones led Paris with 13 points and six rebounds. Emily Hinkson added 12 points and eight rebounds. Sasha Davis and Janette Pacas chipped in with six points each.
Kendra Carroll led Paintsville with 13 points. Jesikah Russell added 12 points including three three point baskets. 5-3 Fr. Amanda Jarrell chipped in with eight points.

Somerset trailed 28-22 after three quarters but outscored Raceland 18-7 in the final period to earn a 40-35 victory. Somerset shot 37.2% from the field including two of 15 from the three point line. The Briar Jumpers connected on six of 11 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 17 Raceland turnovers. Raceland shot 29% from the field, including one of five from beyond the arc. The Lady Rams connected on 16 of 24 free throws, grabbed 30 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 16 Somerset turnovers.
Caiti Cowan led Somerset with 12 points. Chelsea Felts added eight points and eight rebounds. Chelsea Gomez chipped in with six points.
Rachel Vanderhoof led Raceland with 20 points and six rebounds. Vanderhoof was five of nine from the field and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Paige Porter added seven points and seven rebounds.

Lexington Christian Academy hit the court running and never slowed down in a 69-40 victory over St. Mary. The Lady Eagles led 46-15 at halftime and increased their margin to 61-21 after three quarters. LCA substituted liberally as their five starters only played from 14:39 to 17:14 minutes. The Lady Eagles held St. Mary to 15.4% from the field in the first half.
Lexington Christian Academy shot 42.9% from the field including seven of 21 from the three point line. The Lady Eagles connected on eight of 14 free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored 31 points off 33 St. Mary turnovers. LCA recorded 23 steals for the game. St. Mary shot 30.3% from the field, including six of nine from beyond the arc. The Lady Vikings connected on 14 of 24 from the free throw line, grabbed 27 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 19 LCA turnovers.
Courtney Clifton led LCA with 15 points, four assists, and eight steals. Emily London also scored 15 points and recorded six steals. Sarah Beth Barnette added 10 points and eight rebounds. Anna Martin chipped in with 10 points. Abby Townzen led St. Mary with 14 points including three three point baskets. 5-4 Fr. Kelly Cochran added 10 points.

Carroll County led 36-29 after three quarters and held on down the stretch to defeat Owensboro Catholic 47-45. Owensboro Catholic missed a game-tying layup and two of three free throws down the stretch that allowed Carroll County to escape with the victory.
Carroll County shot 40.5% from the field including six of 22 from the three point line. The Lady Panthers connected on seven of 14 free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 16 Owensboro Catholic turnovers. Owensboro Catholic shot 36.6% from the field including six of 17 from beyond the arc. The Lady Aces connected on nine of 14 from the free throw line, grabbed 30 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 14 Carroll County turnovers.
Whitney Ballinger led the victors with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Amber Girdy added nine points and five steals. Lindsay Wallace chipped in with eight points.
5-8 Sr. Natalie Elliott led Owensboro Catholic with 12 points on four three point baskets. Hannah Gerteisen added eight points. Rachel Greenwell chipped in with six points and six rebounds.

Kentucky Country Day shot 46.7% from the field including three of five from beyond the arc. The Bearcats connected on four of six free throws, grabbed 21 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 16 Lyon County turnovers.
Hayley Parrent led Lyon County with 19 points including four three point baskets. Abbey McLeod recorded 14 points and seven steals. Allison Mussato added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Olivia Akridge chipped in with seven points and 13 assists.
Samantha Sweet led Kentucky Country Day with 14 points. Maddie Gmelin added nine points.

Hazard shot 19.7% from the field including one of nine from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs connected on seven of 12 free throws, grabbed 46 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 14 Cumberland County turnovers.
Kristen Rowe led Cumberland County with 26 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals. Sarah Sullivan added 19 points including four three point baskets. Erika Murphy chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Laura Fletcher recorded five points, eight assists, and six steals.
Tayler Niece led Hazard with 10 points and six rebounds. Arielle Engle added eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. 5-7 Sr. Tiffany Clemons chipped in with five points and nine rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic held Bardstown to eight points and 8.7% shooting from the field in the second half in a 44-24 victory.
Newport Central Catholic shot 31.9% from the field including two of 14 from the three point line. The Thoroughbreds connected on 12 of 19 free throws, pulled down 43 rebounds, and scored nine points off 17 Bardstown turnovers. Bardstown shot 16.7% from the field including two of 16 from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers connected on eight of 20 free throws, and grabbed 33 rebounds.
Whitney Cundiff led the victors with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Courtney Sandfoss added eight points. Mariah Cutter chipped in with seven points.
Shanissa Douglas led Bardstown with 10 points. Candyce Lewis added seven points. Daziah Kimberland chipped in with five points.

Paris closed out the game with a 12-1 run to defeat Somerset by a score of 27-22. Somerset led 16-15 at the end of three quarters and led 21-15 early in the fourth quarter. Paris then called a timeout, turned up the heat on defense, and held Somerset to one free throw the rest of the game.
Paris shot 24.3% from the field including two of eight from the three point line. The Ladyhounds connected on only seven of 24 free throws, pulled down 37 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 16 Somerset turnovers. Somerset shot 19% from the field including only one of 14 from beyond the arc. The Briar Jumpers connected on five of 15 free throws and pulled down 39 rebounds.
Nakita Jones led Paris with 11 points and nine rebounds. Caiti Cowan led Somerset with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Chelsea Felts added six points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Carroll County shot 35.4% from the field, including three of 20 from beyond the arc. The Lady Panthers connected on four of seven from the free throw line, grabbed 31 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 18 LCA turnovers.
Anna Martin led LCA with 20 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Courtney Clifton added 15 points, seven assists, and seven steals. Emily London chipped in with 12 points and five assists. Clara Mitchell recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
Amber Girdy led Carroll County with 16 points. Whitney Ballinger added nine points and 10 rebounds. 5-8 Sr. Jacquelyn Lowe chipped in with eight points.

Lyon County shot 37.7% from the field including three of nine from the three point line. The Lady Lyons connected on 20 of 27 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 14 Cumberland County turnovers. Cumberland County shot 42% from the field including two of nine from beyond the arc. The Lady Panthers connected on 15 of 21 free throws, grabbed 33 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 11 Lyon County turnovers.
Abbey McLeod led Lyon County with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Allison Mussato added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Hayley Parrent chipped in with 15 points including three three point baskets. Olivia Akridge recorded 12 points and seven assists.

Newport Central Catholic led 38-34 after three quarters and pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Paris by a score of 51-39. The victors held a 19-7 advantage in free throw points.
Newport Central Catholic shot 34.2% from the field including six of 10 from the three point line. The Thoroughbreds connected on 19 of 18 free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 16 Paris turnovers. Paris shot 28% from the field including four of 18 from beyond the arc. The Ladyhounds connected on seven of 11 from the free throw line, grabbed 40 rebounds, and scored 10 points off 14 NCC turnovers.
Shannon Klei led the victors with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Whitney Cundiff and 5-5 Jr. Savannah Simms added 10 points each. Courtney Sandfoss chipped in with nine points.

Lexington Christian Academy took control of the game with a 30-8 advantage in the third quarter on their way to an 83-63 victory over Lyon County. The Lady Eagles scored 36 points off 23 Lyon County turnovers and held a 24-9 advantage in three point points.
LCA shot 48.4% from the field including eight of 17 from the three point line. The Lady Eagles connected on 13 of 16 free throws and pulled down 39 rebounds. Lyon County shot 32.7% from the field, including three of 11 from beyond the arc. The Lady Lyons connected on 28 of 36 from the free throw line, grabbed 31 rebounds, and scored 24 points off 22 LCA turnovers.
Emily London led LCA with 32 points including five three point baskets. Sarah Beth Barnette added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Courtney Clifton chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, and six steals. Anna Martin recorded 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, and five steals.
Allison Mussato led Lyon County with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Abbey McLeod added 20 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

Lexington Christian Academy continued their impressive tournament run with an 83-57 victory over Newport Central Catholic in the championship game. The victorious Lady Eagles scored 26 points off 21 Newport Central Catholic turnovers and recorded 13 steals.
Lexington Christian Academy shot 43.5% from the field including eight of 23 from the three point line. The Lady Eagles connected on 15 of 19 free throws and pulled down 43 rebounds. Newport Central Catholic shot 31.3% from the field including two of 15 from beyond the arc. The Thoroughbreds connected on 13 of 22 free throws, grabbed 48 rebounds, and scored six points off 12 LCA turnovers.
Emily London led LCA with 23 points including four three point baskets. Anna Martin added 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals. Sarah Beth Barnette chipped in with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Clara Mitchell recorded 11 points and five rebounds.

Conclusion
This was an excellent tournament and an outstanding week of basketball.
Lexington Christian Academy dominated this week, defeating four opponents by an
average margin of 25.8 points per game. The Lady Eagles relied on a
stifling defense and an excellent offense directed flawlessly by senior floor
general Emily London. She had plenty of help on both ends of the
floor in sophs Anna Martin, Courtney Clifton, and Clara
Mitchell, and freshman Sarah Beth Barnette. All five starters
deservedly made the All-Tournament Team. Coach Seamands has this team
clicking on all cylinders and they are a force to reckon with.
Also, congratulations to Coach Christie McDonald and the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds for an excellent tournament run. Congratulations to members of the All-Tournament Team and to several other players who played well this week.
This event is always special and touching for me. I graduated from a school many years ago with a senior class of 37 students. This tournament truly epitomizes the ideals and standards that the founders wisely saw in their crystal ball several years ago. The talent was excellent, the fan support outstanding, and several of these teams should challenge for regional championships and berths in the girls state tourney later this season. Congratulations to all for a job well done.
