Scott County (18-4) vs. Covington Catholic (16-5)
Scott County coach Billy Hicks started the following lineup: 6-3 Jr. Rodney Haddix, 6-3 So. Bud Mackey, 6-5 So. Tyler Portwood, 5-10 Sr. Jesse Thompson, and 6-4 Jr. Matt Walls. Covington Catholic coach Mike Listerman countered with 6-5 Sr. Danny Noll, 6-0 Jr. Todd Jacobs, 6-5 Sr. Michael Young, 5-11 Sr. Tim Tierney, and 6-1 Jr. Kurt Bovard.
Scott County trailed 52-49 at the end of three quarters but the Cardinals outscored Covington Catholic 28-19 in the final quarter to earn a 77-71 victory. This was a game of runs as Scott County took a 22-14 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 40-32 advantage at halftime. Covington Catholic rallied to outscore the Cardinals 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 52-49 margin entering the final quarter. Covington Catholic extended their advantage in the final quarter before Scott County scrapped back for a big victory on the road.
Scott County shot 49.1% from the field including six of 11 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 17 of 24 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 15 Covington Catholic turnovers. Covington Catholic shot 40.4% from the field including six of 21 from the three point line. The Colonels connected on 23 of 26 free throws, grabbed 29 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 17 Scott County turnovers. Covington Catholic held an 11-1 margin in bench scoring.
Covington Catholic shot 56.7% from the field, connected on 20 of 31 free throws, and pulled down 39 rebounds. Scott County shot 38.1% from the field, connected on 16 of 25 free throws, and grabbed 37 rebounds.
Rodney Haddix led Scott County with 25 points and eight rebounds. Haddix was nine of 16 from the field including two of four from the three point line and five of six from the free throw line. Bud Mackey added 20 points on eight of 11 from the field and four of seven from the free throw line. Matt Walls added 16 points, four assists, and three steals.
Tim Tierney led Covington Catholic with 22 points. Tierney was seven of 12 from the field including two of four from beyond the arc and six of six from the free throw line. Todd Jacobs added 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. 6-1 Sr. Joe Landrum chipped in with 11 points.
