The All “A” Classic started in 1980 with eight teams and in 1990 became a true statewide championship with 16 boys regional tournament winners competing for the championship. Champions crowned to date are 1980 Covington Holy Cross, 1981 Bellevue, 1982 Carlisle County, 1983 Walton-Verona, 1984 Oneida Baptist, 1985 Harlan, 1986 Muhlenberg Central, 1987 Covington Holy Cross, 1988 Bardstown, 1989 Central City, 1990 University Heights, 1991 University Heights, 1992 Lexington Catholic, 1993 Dilce Combs, 1994 Harlan, 1995 Harlan, 1996 University Heights, 1997 Lexington Catholic, 1998 University Heights, 1999 University Heights, 2000 Newport Central Catholic, 2001 Glasgow, 2002 University Heights, 2003 St. Henry, 2004 Hazard, and 2005 University Heights.
Thursday February 2nd - Day 1
Game No. 1 University Heights Academy (17-3) (Region 2) vs. Lexington Christian Academy (9-5) (Region 11)
University Heights Academy coach Phil Keller started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Carson Rager, 6-4 Sr. Justin Haskins, 6-3 Sr. Patrick Metcalfe, 5-11 Sr. Phillip Whitaker, and 5-11 Sr. Joshua Mack. Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands countered with 6-3 Sr. Tyler Rogers, 6-6 Sr. Seth Lawless, 6-4 Sr. Clay Turner, 6-0 Sr. Blake Morris, and 5-11 Sr. Rich Ludka.
University Heights survived a frantic comeback Lexington Christian Academy to tie the game in regulation and capture a 71-66 decision in overtime. LCA trailed 48-30 with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter and actually took a 63-61 lead on two free throws by Rich Ludka with 17 seconds remaining in the game. University Heights’ Joshua Mack hit a tying basket in the lane with four seconds remaining in the game to force overtime. University Heights outscored LCA 8-3 in overtime to secure the victory. LCA had outscored University Heights 33-15 from late in the third quarter to the end of regulation with Rich Ludka scoring 19 of the 33 points.
University Heights Academy shot 43.1% from the field, connected on 16 of 20 free throws, and pulled down 44 rebounds. LCA shot 34.7% from the field including nine of 35 from beyond the arc. LCA was five of 10 from the free throw line and grabbed 41 rebounds. Lexington Christian Academy scored 24 points off 16 UHA turnovers and held an 18-11 advantage in bench scoring.
Phillip Whitaker led University Heights with 21 points including three of five from the three point line. Carson Rager, Patrick Metcalfe, and 6-3 So. Tyshwan Edmondson added 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. Justin Haskins added nine points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Joshua Mack, who has been slowed by a groin injury, recorded seven points, four rebounds, and five assists including some key plays down the stretch. Rich Ludka led Lexington Christian Academy with 33 points including six of 12 from beyond the arc. 5-11 Sr. Zach Sanders added 11 points and Seth Lawless chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.

Owensboro Catholic scored 15 points off 19 Moore turnovers in a 42-30 victory. The victors shot 34.9% from the field, connected on eight of 12 free throws, and pulled down 27 rebounds. Moore shot 26.1% from the field, connected on both free throws, and grabbed 38 rebounds.
Andrew Howard, Travis Owsley, and Jay Ivey paced Owensboro Catholic with 12, nine, and eight points respectively. 5-10 Jr. Kaelin Hall led Moore with 13 points. Marcus Burks added 10 points and eight rebounds.

South Floyd coach Barry Hall countered with 5-10 Sr. T. J. Hall, 6-0 Sr. Ryan Johnson, 6-2 Sr. Ryan Little, 5-11 Sr. Mason Hall, and 6-0 Jr. Ethan Johnson.
The score was tied 28-28 at halftime but Mayfield outscored South Floyd 24-13 in the third quarter on their way to a 71-52 victory. Mayfield held a 42-21 advantage in rebounds and enjoyed a 14-6 advantage in second chance points.
Mayfield shot 53.1% from the field, including five of 15 from beyond the arc. Mayfield connected on 14 of 28 free throws, and scored 19 points off 13 South Floyd turnovers. South Floyd shot 41.5% from the field, including six of 22 from the three point line. The Raiders connected on 12 of 22 free throws, and scored 11 points off 15 Mayfield turnovers.
Tony Hockett led Mayfield with 26 points and eight rebounds. Demetrek Moss, Fred Brown, and Jeremy Rodgers added 16, 10, and 10 points respectively. Ethan Johnson led South Floyd with 13 points including three three point baskets. Ryan Little and Ryan Johnson added 11 points each, and Little pulled down seven rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic combined excellent long-range shooting (nine of 16 from the arc) and a strong inside presence by Zach Kiernan to defeat Fairview 75-65.
Newport Central Catholic shot 60.9% from the field including nine of 16 from beyond the arc. They connected on 10 of 17 free throws, pulled down 29 rebounds, and scored 11 points off nine Fairview turnovers. Fairview shot 43.3% from the field including nine of 20 from the three point line. Fairview connected on four of five from the free throw line, grabbed 29 rebounds and scored 11 points off eight Newport Central Catholic turnovers.
Zach Kiernan led the victors with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Scott Gessenhues added 20 points including four of five from the three point line. George Stoll, Kevin Bueter, and Luke Heil chipped in with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Bueter also dished out 10 assists. Alex Barker led Fairview with 18 points and seven assists. Trevor Holbrook and Justin Hutchinson added 17 and 14 points respectively.

Somerset defeated Beth Haven by a score of 59-45. The victors shot 52.8% from the field, connected on 20 of 28 free throws, and pulled down 32 rebounds. The Briar Jumpers scored 17 points off 20 Beth Haven turnovers. Beth Haven shot 33.3% from the field including six of 22 from the three point line. Beth Haven connected on seven of 10 free throws, pulled down 23 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 18 Somerset turnovers.
Ray Norman led Somerset with 18 points and seven rebounds. Norman was five of seven from the field and eight of eight from the free throw line. Nathan Holton added 16 points and nine rebounds. Spencer Shull led Beth Haven with 13 points.

Bardstown shot a sizzling 62.2% from the field in a 69-51 victory over Gallatin County. Bardstown connected on 10 of 17 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 12 Gallatin County turnovers. Gallatin County only managed 24.6% from the field including three of 18 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats connected on 18 of 28 free throws, grabbed 37 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 18 Bardstown turnovers. Gallatin County held a 22-5 advantage in offensive rebounds and enjoyed a 16-4 margin in second chance points.
Brian Calhoun led Bardstown with 24 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists. Kurtis Neel added 20 points and eight rebounds. Justin Davis and Cody Perkins led Gallatin County with 12 and 10 points respectively. 6-1 Fr. Trent Maddox added nine points and Jared Carlton chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.

Barbourville shot 63.6% from the field and defeated Russellville 68-56. Russellville actually attempted 19 more shots from the field (52-33) but only made one more field goal. Barbourville held a 24-8 advantage in free throws.
Barbourville connected on 24 of 35 free throws, pulled down 22 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 12 Russellville turnovers. Russellville shot 42.3% from the field, connected on eight of 12 free throws, and grabbed 30 rebounds. The Panthers scored 18 points off 11 Barbourville turnovers.
Aaron Grubb led Barbourville with 23 points. Chris Good and Derek Vanover added 19 and 11 points respectively. Matthew Cox chipped in with eight points and 11 assists. Jerrell Mayo led Russellville with 22 points and seven rebounds.

Bishop Brossart scored 26 points off 20 Lee County turnovers in a 68-49 victory. Bishop Brossart shot 43.6% from the field, connected on 16 of 20 from the free throw line, and pulled down 36 rebounds. Lee County shot 45.2% from the field, connected on nine of 13 free throws, and grabbed 20 rebounds. Bishop Brossart committed 15 turnovers but Lee County could only capitalize for 10 points.
Troy Cooper led the victors with 18 points and eight rebounds. Nathan Mutsch added 17 points and eight rebounds while Jimmy Uebel chipped in with 15 points. Kenny Brandenburg led Lee County with 12 points and six assists. Caleb Fetters and Tyler Rich added nine points each.

University Heights led 46-43 early in the fourth quarter but Owensboro Catholic rallied to outscore the Blazers 23-12 down the stretch to earn a 66-58 victory. This was a battle between two Class “A” heavyweights. Owensboro Catholic scored 20 points off 11 University Heights turnovers to dethrone the defending champions.
Owensboro Catholic shot 48.9% from the field, including six of 15 from the three point line. They connected on 16 of 19 free throws and pulled down 22 rebounds. University Heights Academy shot 52.2% from the field, including six of 14 from beyond the arc. The Blazers connected on four of seven free throws and grabbed 26 rebounds.
Travis Owsley led Owensboro Catholic with 24 points and five assists. Andrew Howard added 23 points including five of 10 from the three point line. Jay Ivey chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds. Joshua Mack led University Heights Academy with 20 points and six assists. Phillip Whitaker added 10 points. Justin Haskins and Patrick Metcalfe each scored nine points and pulled down eight and seven rebounds respectively.

Newport Central Catholic survived a terrible night from the free throw line (20 of 50) to eke out a 75-69 double overtime victory over Mayfield. The Thoroughbreds could only managed one of 13 from the charity stripe in the first half.
Newport Central Catholic shot 55.8% from the field, including seven of 14 from the three point line. They pulled down 30 rebounds and scored 14 points off 15 Mayfield turnovers. Mayfield shot 43.1% from the field, including eight of 18 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals connected on 11 of 17 free throws, and grabbed 42 rebounds.
Zach Kiernan led Newport Central Catholic with 23 points despite only connecting on five of 19 free throws. Kiernan also pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked three shots. Kevin Bueter and Luke Heil added 18 and 14 points respectively. George Stoll recorded 12 points on four three point baskets. Tony Hockett led Mayfield with 20 points and nine rebounds. Adam Shelton and Jeremy Rodgers added 15 points each with Adam Shelton pulling down 12 rebounds. Demetrek Moss chipped in with 13 points.

The Tigers connected on 20 of 31 free throws and pulled down 33 rebounds. Somerset shot 34.8% from the field, including three of 18 from beyond the arc. The Briar Jumpers connected on 18 of 24 free throws, and grabbed 28 rebounds.
Brian Calhoun led Bardstown with 23 points. Kurtis Neel added 14 points. 6-0 Jr. Vinnie Calhoun came off the bench to pull down a team-high seven rebounds. Nathan Holton led Somerset with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Ray Norman added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Bishop Brossart held a 14-4 advantage on second chance points and a 21-5 advantage in bench scoring.
Barbourville shot 28.2% from the field, including only two of 15 from the three point line. The Tigers connected on five of 10 free throws, and pulled down 24 rebounds.
Troy Cooper and Jimmy Uebel led Bishop Brossart with 14 and 11 points respectively. Nathan Mutsch added nine points and 6-6 Sr. Kyle Lubbers chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds. Travis Crawford and Chris Good led Bishop Brossart with nine and six points respectively. Barbourville lost three players via the foul route (Matthew Cox, Chris Good, and Aaron Grubb).

Newport Central Catholic coach Rob Detzel started the following lineup: 6-2 Sr. Luke Heil, 6-1 Sr. George Stoll, 6-6 Jr. Zach Kiernan, 6-0 Sr. Scott Gessenhues, and 5-11 Sr. Kevin Bueter. Owensboro Catholic coach Mike Orr countered with 6-5 Sr. Jake O’Nan, 6-2 Sr. Andrew Howard, 6-8 Sr. Jay Ivey, 5-10 Sr. Wayne Howard, and 5-11 Sr. Travis Owsley.
Owensboro Catholic held a 33-18 advantage in rebounds and a 13-2 advantage in second chance points during a 49-37 victory over Newport Central Catholic. The victors shot 47.2% from the field, including two of nine from the three point line. The Aces connected on 13 of 21 free throws. Newport Central Catholic shot 35% from the field including only one of 11 from beyond the arc. The Thoroughbreds connected on eight of 11 free throws.
Travis Owsley led the victors with 17 points. Jay Ivey added 15 points and nine rebounds while Andrew Howard chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Zach Kiernan led Newport Central Catholic with 13 points. Kevin Bueter and Luke Heil added 10 and eight points respectively.

Bishop Brossart coach Mike Code started the following lineup: 6-5 Jr. Nathan Mutsch, 6-2 Jr. Jimmy Uebel, 6-5 Jr. Troy Cooper, 5-11 Jr. Josh Kidney, and 5-10 Sr. Brad Seiter. Bardstown coach Gary Goode countered with 6-2 Sr. Elliot Mattingly, 6-0 Sr. Brian Calhoun, 6-3 Sr. Kurtis Neel, 5-7 Sr. Desmond Phillips, and 5-10 Sr. Josh Payne.
Bishop Brossart led 28-20 at halftime but Bardstown rallied in the second half on the strength of 69.6% shooting from the field to take a 63-60 victory. Bardstown outscored Bishop Brossart 25-14 in the third quarter to take a 45-42 lead entering the final period. Bishop Brossart took a 55-54 lead with 2:42 remaining but Bardstown rallied to earn the victory.
Bardstown shot 58.5% from the field, including five of nine from the three point line. The Tigers connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 12 Bishop Brossart turnovers. Bishop Brossart shot 47.9% from the field, including five of 17 from beyond the arc. The Mustangs connected on nine of 13 free throws, grabbed 21 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 17 Bardstown turnovers.
5-10 Jr. Wenquel Graves came off the bench to lead Bardstown with 22 points and six assists. Brian Calhoun added 19 points and six rebounds and Elliot Mattingly chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. 6-6 Sr. Kyle Lubbers and Troy Cooper led Bishop Brossart with 15 points each.

Bardstown coach Gary Goode started the following lineup: 6-2 Sr. Elliot Mattingly, 6-0 Sr. Brian Calhoun, 6-3 Sr. Kurtis Neel, 5-7 Sr. Desmond Phillips, and 5-10 Sr. Josh Payne. Owensboro Catholic coach Mike Orr countered with 6-5 Sr. Jake O’Nan, 6-2 Sr. Andrew Howard, 6-8 Sr. Jay Ivey, 5-10 Sr. Wayne Howard, and 5-11 Sr. Travis Owsley.
Bardstown held on down the stretch to defeat Owensboro Catholic 53-50 to claim the championship. Owensboro Catholic led 20-15 after the first quarter but Bardstown outscored the Aces 18-7 in the second quarter to lead 33-27 at halftime. The Tigers increased the margin to nine, 47-44 at the end of three quarters. Bardstown led 51-44 with 6:15 left in the game but was outscored 6-0 in the next few minutes and led 51-50 with 1:31 left in the game. Bardstown’s Brian Calhoun hit two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to make the score 53-50 and Owensboro Catholic missed a three point attempt in the closing seconds. Owensboro Catholic had several chances to tie or take the lead in the closing minutes but could not find the range.
Bardstown shot 40.9% from the field, including eight of 17 beyond the arc. The Tigers connected on nine of 10 free throws and pulled down 33 rebounds. The Tigers rotated several players tonight to effectively limit Owensboro Catholic’s Travis Owsley to two points today. Owensboro Catholic shot 39.2% from the field, including six of 25 from the three point line. The Aces connected on four of six free throws and pulled down 26 rebounds.
Brian Calhoun led Bardstown with 24 points including three three point baskets and pulled down nine rebounds. Kurtis Neel added 14 points including four of five from beyond the arc. Jay Ivey led Owensboro Catholic with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Andrew Howard added 11 points.

Conclusion
This was an excellent tourney and an outstanding week of basketball. Bardstown
concluded an excellent tourney run with a championship. The Tigers have
been overlooked because of their relative lack of size, but they climbed the
mountain this week and should get some respect.
This event was special for me from a personal view. I graduated from a school many years ago with a senior class of 37 students. This tournament truly epitomizes the ideals and standards that the founders wisely saw in their crystal ball several years ago. The talent was excellent, the fan support enthusiastic, and the tournament gave outstanding players like Bardstown’s Brian Calhoun a stage in which to be apperciated. Congratulations to all for a job well done.
