Game No. 1 Barbourville vs. Buckhorn

The Barbourville Tigers are coached by Dinky Phipps, finished 22-8 last season, and reside in the 13th Region. Barbourville has four starters returning to defend their All "A" Classic regional championship. Some of the players to watch this season include 6-1 Sr. guard Matt Cox, 6-3 Sr. swingman Chris Good, 6-5 Sr. forward Travis Crawford, and 6-4 Sr. C/F Aron Grubb. Buckhorn plays in the 14th Region and is coached by John Noble. The Wildcats finished 11-17 last season and return four players with starting experience. Players to watch include 5-11 Sr. guard Kevin Davidson, 6-3 Jr. guard Justin Rice, 5-11 Sr. guard Brandon Miller, and 6-6 So. center Zach Gay. 6-4 Sr. forward Josh Riley transferred from Owsley County and is expected to contribute.

Game No. 2 Betsy Layne vs. Lynn Camp

The Betsy Layne Bobcats play in the 15th Region, finished 16-10 last year, and are coached by Brent Rose. Players to watch include 6-3 Sr. center Brandon Kidd (16 ppg), 5-10 Sr. guard Brandon Thacker, 6-3 Sr. forward Derek Case, and 5-10 Sr. guard Patrick Stapleton. Coach Anthony Pennington's Lynn Camp Wildcats finished 16-10 last season and reside in the 13th Region. Players to watch include 6-1 Sr. guard Adam Bray, 6-1 Sr. forward Chris Eggen, and 6-6 Sr. forward Nathan Tanner. The Wildcats chances will be buoyed by two transfers, 6-8 Sr. center Cody Dixon (from Corbin), and 5-10 Sr. guard Joe Siler (from Scott County).

Game No. 3 Louisville Holy Cross vs. Deming

Coach Jody Thornsberry's Louisville Holy Cross Cougars play in the 6th Region and finished 9-17 last season. The Cougars will be small but extremely quick. Players to watch include 5-11 Jr. Brent Thompson, 5-9 So. Nick House, 6-2 Sr. Steve Wright, and 6-2 Sr. Eric Floyd. The Deming Black Devils are coached by Aaron Massey and finished 17-8 last season, playing in the 10th Region. 6-5 Sr. center Jordan Massey and 6-2 Jr. G/F Travis Massey are expected to be key contributors for the Black Devils this season.

Game No. 4 Pineville vs. Adair County

The Pineville Lions are coached by J. D. Strange, finished 11-16 last season, and reside in the 13th Region. 6-6 So. center Dustin Day is a promising big man and other players to watch include 6-1 Sr. G/F Blake Hensley, 6-1 Sr. guard Derek Rosenbalm, 5-11 So. guard Jared Jeffrey, 5-10 So. guard Dustin Warren, and 5-11 Fr. guard James David Strange. Coach Mark Fudge's Adair County Indians finished 15-12 last season and hail from the 5th Region. Players expected to contribute include 6-2 Sr. James Flatt (14 ppg), 5-10 Jr. Joseph Willis, 6-3 Jr. Chris Lewis, and 5-8 Fr. Nick Fudge. Adair County also has a potential budding star in highly touted 6-7 Fr. Darren Ballou.

Game No. 5 Clinton County vs. Knott County Central

Coach Darrell Thompson's Clinton County Bulldogs play in the 4th Region and finished 18-13 last season. Clinton County returns four starters from last season including one of the best players in the region in 6-4 Jr. G/F Justin Vitatoe. Knott County Central is coached by Neal Feltner, finished 14-12 last season, and resides in the 14th Region. 6-2 Sr. forward Adam Dials and 5-11 Jr. guard Scott Mosley are key returnees. Other players expected to contribute include 6-2 Sr. center Justin Bates, 6-1 Sr. forward Charles Pike, 6-2 Jr. guard Michael Lindon, and 6-0 Jr. guard Matt Amburgey.

Game No. 6 Green County vs. Leslie County

Green County is coached by Toby Curry, and the Dragons finished 7-20 last season and reside in the 5th Region. Green County returns all five starters from last season. The key returnee for the Dragons is 6-4 Sr. forward Mickie Ray (17 ppg, 10 rpg). The guard positions should be manned by 5-7 Fr. Clint Henderson, and 6-0 Sr. Alex Compton. Key frontline performers include 6-2 So. Colton Lobb, 6-1 So. Matthew Edwards, and 6-0 Jr. Kelly Deaton. Coach Tim Sizemore's Leslie County Eagles finished 20-10 last season, and should be near the top of the mountain in the 14th Region this season. 6-4 Sr. G/F Daniel Day and 6-5 Sr. forward Quentin Morgan should give the Eagles an excellent 1-2 punch this season as both averaged around 17 ppg last season.

Game No. 7 Millersburg Military Institute vs. New Creations (IN)

MMI coach Russ Day has a lot of size and talent at his disposal including 7-2 Sr. Lawrence Brown, 6-11 Sr. Jonathan Uchendu, and 6-8 Jr. Matthew Morgan. New Creations is coached by Tony Cole and should be led by 6-6 post grad Trevor Ferguson.

Game No. 8 Harlan vs. East Jessamine

The much improved Harlan Dragons finished 19-13 for coach Casey Lester last season, playing in the 13th Region. Coach Lester has an excellent guard duo returning in 6-0 Jr. John Smith (21 ppg) and 5-10 Sr. Ryan Clem (14 ppg). Other players expected to contribute include 6-7 Jr. center Robbie Curtis, 6-4 Sr. forward Stephen Brown, and 6-2 Sr. Casey Huff. Coach Chris O'Bryan's East Jessamine Jaguars finished 14-14 last season and moves to the 12th Region this season. 6-3 Sr. F/C Eurich Downey should be one of the best players in the region. Other key players include 6-0 Sr. guard Jonathan Foster, 5-10 Jr. guard Ryan Hager, 6-2 Jr. forward Justin Sanders, and 6-2 So. F/C Matt Whitley.

Game No. 9 Henry Clay vs. Brentwood Academy (TN)

Henry Clay veteran coach Kirk Chiles directed his Blue Devils to a 31-4 finish last season, playing in the always tough 11th Region. The Blue Devils should be extremely tough this season, led by 6-2 Sr. Aaron Dunaway one of the leading contenders for Mr. Basketball. Other talented returnees include 6-2 Sr. guard Aaron Miller, 5-11 Jr. guard Chase Minnifield, 6-4 So. forward Aaron Boyd, 5-11 Jr. guard Travis Bowman, and 6-4 So. forward Victor Moses. Brentwood Academy is coached by George Pitts and will be led by All American 6-9½ Sr. F/C Brandan Wright. Other players to watch include 6-2 Sr. guard Joshua Bone and 6-6 Jr. forward Brandon Brown.

Game No. 10 South Laurel vs. Paintsville

Coach Steve Wright's South Laurel Cardinals went 32-4 last season, captured the state championship, and moved from the 12th to the 13th Region due to realignment. The Cardinals return three starters including 6-4 Sr. Walt Allen (16 ppg), who captured the state tourney MVP award last season and is also one of the leading contenders for Mr. Basketball. 6-4 Jr. Ty Proffitt is an outstanding point guard and 6-4 Jr. Jordan Hammonds can light it up from the perimeter. Some other key returnees include 6-2 Sr. forward Josh Riley, 6-7 Jr. forward Trey Smith, and 5-10 Sr. guard Zach Marcum. The Paintsville Tigers finished 14-15 last season, and coach Bill Mike Runyon's team should be strong contenders for the 15th Region title this season. 6-3 So. guard Landon Slone averaged over 20 ppg in his freshman campaign last season. Other key contributors this season are expected to include 6-0 So. guard Blake Bundy 6-2 So. G/F J. D. VanHoose, 6-2 So. guard Shane Grimm, and 6-1 Jr. guard Daniel Pugh.

Game No. 11 Franklin County vs. Perry County Central

Coach Scott Chalk's Franklin County Flyers finished 17-14 last season and return a veteran group to compete in the 11th Region wars. Coach Chalk's key returnees include 6-7 Sr. Paul Chambers, 6-5 Sr. Chase Straw, 6-4 Sr. Houston Hardy, 6-0 Sr. Cameron Conner, 6-3 Jr. Michael Scott, 5-11 Sr. Matt Harris, 6-5 Jr. Cy Hines, 5-11 Sr. John Meyer, and 6-0 Jr. Eric May. The Perry County Central Commodores are coached by Allan Holland, finished 23-8 last season, and reside in the 14th Region. The Commodores lost four starters but retain enough talent to contend for the regional title. 6-3 Sr. guard Robert Paul Amis returns and 6-4 Jr. forward Tyler Bailey (a transfer from Hazard) will also help. Other key returnees include 6-3 So. forward Jason Kelly, 5-11 Jr. guard Justin Stacy, and 5-11 Sr. guard Devan Gross.

Game No. 12 Sayre vs. Lincoln County

Coach Gene Kirk's Sayre Spartans finished 18-8 last season and hail from the 11th Region. Coach Kirk returns four starters from last year's team but lacks size in the paint. 6-3 Jr. Trae Cunningham is a good outside shooter and other key returnees include 5-11 Sr. Chris Scott, 5-5 Jr. Dee Smith, 6-2 Sr. Bush Gess, and 5-10 Sr. Will Campbell. Coach Jeff Jackson's Lincoln County Patriots finished 6-21 last season but should be improved in 12th Region play this season. The Patriots return all five starters from last season. 6-3 Sr. Zach Kersey, 6-1 Sr. Matt Reynolds, and 5-6 Jr. Kelly Reed should add experience to this team. 6-5 Jr. Derek Todd, 5-10 So. Ryan Young, and 5-10 So. Daniel Ralston are also members of a deep roster who will help this season.

Game No. 1 Barbourville vs. Buckhorn

Barbourville coach Dinky Phipps started the following lineup: 6-4 Sr. Aron Grubb, 6-3 Sr. Chris Good, 6-5 Sr. Travis Crawford, 6-1 Sr. Matt Cox, and 6-1 So. Derick Vanover. Buckhorn coach John Noble countered with 6-4 Sr. Josh Riley, 6-3 Jr. Justin Rice, 6-6 So. Zach Gay, 5-11 Sr. Kevin Davidson, and 5-11 Sr. Brandon Miller.

Matt Cox hit a 12 foot jumper with three seconds remaining on the clock to give Barbourville a 54-52 victory over Buckhorn in a well-played opening game. Aron Grubb and Matt Cox led the victors with 14 and 13 points respectively. Josh Riley led Buckhorn with 15 points. Zach Gay and Brandon Miller added 10 points each.

Louisville Holy Cross coach Jody Thornsberry countered with 6-2 Sr. Steve Wright, 6-0 So. Matthew Hill, 6-4 So. Kevin Cain, 5-11 Jr. Brent Thompson, and 5-9 So. Nick House.

Deming held on to win a thriller over Louisville Holy Cross by a score of 48-46. Travis Massey paced the victors with 24 points. Steve Wright led Louisville Holy Cross with 22 points. Nick House chipped in with 10 points.

Adair County coach Mark Fudge started the following lineup: 6-2 Sr. James Flatt, 6-3 Jr. Chris Lewis, 6-7 Fr. Darren Ballou, 5-10 Jr. Joseph Willis, and 5-8 Fr. Nick Fudge. Pineville coach J. D. Strange countered with 6-1 Sr. Derek Rosenbalm, 6-1 Sr. Blake Hensley, 6-6 So. Dustin Day, 5-10 So. Dustin Warren, and 5-11 Fr. guard James David Strange.

Adair County utilized their inside game to defeat Pineville 50-36. James Flatt led the victors with 17 points. Darren Ballou and Chris Lewis added 14 and 11 points respectively. Blake Hensley and James David Strange led Pineville with 10 and eight points respectively.

Knott County Central coach Neal Feltner countered with 6-2 Sr. Adam Dials, 6-1 Sr. Charles Pike, 6-2 Jr. Michael Lindon, 6-1 Jr. Matthew Everage, and 5-11 Jr. Scott Mosley.

Clinton County defeated Knott County Central 48-28. Tyler Reneau and Justin Vitatoe led the victors with 13 and 12 points respectively. Adam Dials led Knott County Central with six points. It was a tough day for Knott County Central as Scott Mosley went down with a foot injury. Adam Dials left the game with a possible broken nose but managed to return and play over 30 minutes of the game.

Leslie County easily defeated Green County 40-14 today. The victors were led by Daniel Day and Quentin Morgan with nine points each. Mickie Ray led Green County with four points.

New Creations coach Tony Cole countered with 6-6 post grad Trevor Ferguson, 6-6 post grad Nate Florence, 6-2 Sr. Charles Warren, 6-4 Sr. Tim Sloan, and 5-10 post grad Troy Smith.

This game ended in a 38-38 tie. MMI was led by David Wood with 14 points. Matthew Morgan added eight points and 6-11 Sr. Jonathan Uchendu came off the bench to record six points and several blocked shots. Trevor Ferguson led New Creations with 20 points including three three point baskets.

Harlan held a slim 26-25 lead at halftime and pulled away in the second half to defeat East Jessamine 53-41. John Smith and Robbie Curtis led Harlan with 19 and 11 points respectively. Justin Sanders and 6-3 Sr. Eurich Downey led East Jessamine with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Henry Clay coach Kirk Chiles countered with 6-2 Sr. Aaron Dunaway, 6-2 Sr. Aaron Miller, 6-4 So. Victor Moses, 5-7 So. Brian Nichols, and 5-11 Jr. Travis Bowman.

Brentwood Academy held a 51.5%-35.4% edge in field goal shooting in a 57-50 victory over Henry Clay. Brentwood Academy was 11 of 16 from the free throw line while Henry Clay connected on one of three free throws. Joshua Bone and John Garrett led the victors with 12 and 10 points respectively. Brandan Wright added nine points, four rebounds, and seven blocked shots. 6-6 Jr. Brandon Brown also tallied nine points.

Aaron Dunaway led Henry Clay with 16 points and seven rebounds. Victor Moses added 14 points and eight rebounds while Aaron Miller chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Sayre defeated Lincoln County by a score of 39-34. Chris Scott led Sayre with 12 points while Bush Gess added nine points and seven rebounds. Matt Reynolds led Lincoln County with nine points. Ryan Young and 6-3 Sr. Zach Kersey added eight points each.

Conclusion

This was an excellent, well-run event with 24 teams getting the opportunity to play at Rupp Arena, the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. There was a lot of talent on display today with several teams participating that should compete for state honors this season. A special thanks to the untiring efforts by the Kentucky Basketball Academy staff for putting this event together.
