East Jessamine (14-13) vs. Lexington Christian Academy (17-12) (Boys)

East Jessamine coach Chris O’Bryan started the following lineup:  6-1 So. Justin Sanders, 6-2 Fr. Matt Whitley, 6-3 Jr. Eurich Downey, 5-11 Sr. Mark Hamann, and 5-9 Sr. Brett Durham.  Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands countered with 6-5 Sr. Nick Maloy, 6-6 Jr. Andre Henderson, 5-11 Jr. Greg Combs, 5-11 Jr. Chris Wade, and 5-11 Jr. Rich Ludka.

Lexington Christian turned in a defensive gem as they held East Jessamine to 27.4% shooting from the field in a 76-47 victory.  Lexington Christian scored 27 points off 25 East Jessamine turnovers, blocked 10 shots, and recorded 19 steals.  Lexington Christian shot 45.8% from the field, connected on only five of 13 free throws, and pulled down 52 rebounds.  East Jessamine connected on 11 of 22 free throws and grabbed 45 rebounds.

Andre Henderson led LCA with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocked shots.  Greg Combs also scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.  Chris Wade and Nick Maloy added 12 and 10 points respectively, with Maloy pulling down eight rebounds.  Mark Hamann led East Jessamine with 12 points and six rebounds.  Justin Sanders added seven points and eight rebounds.  Eurich Downey chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.

Lexington Christian Academy scored 34 points off 33 Sayre turnovers in a 66-21 victory.  LCA shot 44.1% from the field, connected on nine of 15 free throws, and pulled down 32 rebounds.  LCA held a 33-0 advantage in bench scoring.  Sayre shot 25.8% from the field, connected on four of nine free throws, and grabbed 30 rebounds.

5-8 Jr. Noell Jones came off the bench to to lead the victors with 11 points.  Leah Anderson and Kayla Yates added 10 points each, with Kayla Yates recording six steals.  Logan Marksbury led Sayre with nine points and six rebounds.  Samantha Bowie only tallied three points but pulled down six rebounds and blocked four shots.

Lexington Catholic (27-1) vs. East Jessamine (11-14) (Girls)   Semifinal

Lexington Catholic coach Greg Todd started the following lineup:  5-8 Sr. Adaeze Azubuike, 6-0 Jr. Anaris Sickles, 6-1 Sr. Shannon Novosel, 5-6 So. Keyla Snowden, and 5-8 Jr. Nikki Davis.  East Jessamine coach Ralph Sallee countered with 5-11 Sr. Ruth Byrd, 5-8 Jr. Stephanie Baker, 5-11 8th grader Clara Mitchell, 5-5 Fr. Krichelle Ford, and 5-3 Sr. LaToya Richardson.

Lexington Catholic scored 41 points off 31 East Jessamine turnovers in an 83-40 victory.  Lexington Catholic shot 50.8% from the field including eight of 16 from beyond the arc.  The Lady Knights connected on 11 of 14 free throws and pulled down 37 rebounds.  East Jessamine shot 35.3% from the field, connected on two of seven free throws, and grabbed 31 rebounds.  Lexington Catholic held a 38-5 advantage in bench scoring.

Keyla Snowden led the victors with 21 points on six of eight from the field and eight of eight from the free throw line.  5-6 Fr. Briana Green added 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Adaeze Azubuike chipped in with 10 points.  Ten Lady Knights cracked the scoring column tonight.  Clara Mitchell led East Jessamine with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Stephanie Baker added seven points.  Ruth Byrd only scored four points but pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists.

Sayre coach Gene Kirk started the following lineup:  6-3 So. Trae Cunningham, 6-2 Jr. Bush Gess, 5-11 Jr. Chris Scott, 5-10 Jr. Will Campbell, and 5-5 So. Dee Smith.  West Jessamine coach Bart Flener countered with 6-3 Jr. Brian Johnson, 6-0 Sr. Danny Brown, 6-4 Sr. Cody Schuler, 6-1 Sr. Trevor Gray, and 5-11 Sr. Michael Spann.  (Note: Sayre was without the services of 6-4 Sr. Alex McIntyre who suffered a season-ending injury).

Sayre held a narrow 22-21 lead at halftime but West Jessamine outscored the Spartans 23-9 in the fourth quarter to claim a 53-38 victory.  West Jessamine scored 28 points off 20 Sayre turnovers and recorded 15 steals for the evening.

West Jessamine shot 51.2% from the field, connected on eight of 11 free throws and pulled down 23 rebounds.  Sayre shot 36.8% from the field connected on 10 of 16 free throws and pulled down 26 rebounds.  Sayre held a 14-5 advantage in second chance points.

Michael Spann led West Jessamine with 24 points and four steals. Trevor Gray chipped in with 13 points.  Chris Scott led Sayre with 11 points.  Will Campbell added seven points and nine rebounds while Trae Cunningham chipped in with six points.

Lexington Christian Academy (18-12) vs. Lexington Catholic (21-6) (Boys)  Semifinal

Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands started the following lineup:  6-5 Sr. Nick Maloy, 6-6 Jr. Andre Henderson, 5-11 Jr. Greg Combs, 5-11 Jr. Chris Wade, and 5-11 Jr. Rich Ludka.  Lexington Catholic coach Curtis Turley countered with 6-2 Sr. P. J. Wilson, 6-0 Jr. Cornell Burbage, 6-5 Sr. Rob Riddell, 6-3 Sr. Joe Boneau, and 6-2 Jr. Brian Hewitt.

Lexington Catholic shot a sizzling 60% from the field and enjoyed a 37-20 rebounding advantage in a 78-65 victory over LCA.  The victors shot 60.7% in the first half and shot 59.3% in the second half, and connected on eight of 13 free throws.  LCA shot 40% from the field, including 10 of 26 from the three point line, and connected on seven of 14 free throws.  The Eagles scored 28 points off 21 Lexington Catholic turnovers.

Cornell Burbage led Lexington Catholic with 24 points, eight assists, and three steals.  Brian Hewitt added 16 points and seven rebounds while Rob Riddell chipped in with 15 points and nine rebounds.  P. J. Wilson also reached double digits with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Greg Combs and Chris Wade led Lexington Christian Academy with 15 and 14 points respectively, with Wade nailing three baskets from beyond the arc.  Nick Maloy chipped in with 11 points.

West Jessamine trailed 27-21 early in the third quarter before LCA went on a 28-0 run to break open the game and earn a 76-32 victory.  LCA shot 55.2% from the field, connected on seven of 14 free throws, and pulled down 43 rebounds.  LCA scored 35 points off 27 West Jessamine turnovers and recorded 21 steals.  The Lady Eagles also enjoyed a 42-14 advantage in bench scoring.  West Jessamine shot 26.1% from the field, was four for seven from the free throw line, and grabbed 24 rebounds.

6-1 Jr. Kirby Barnhart came off the bench to to lead LCA with 16 points on eight of 10 shooting from the field.  Emily London added 15 points including three three point baskets, five rebounds, three assists, four blocked shots, and seven steals.  West Jessamine was led tonight by Samantha Shipley, 5-10 Fr. Rachel Birch, and Molly Knight with six points each.

Lexington Catholic scored 27 points off 31 Lexington Christian Academy turnovers and and recorded 25 steals in a 64-28 victory.  Lexington Catholic shot 33.9% from the field, was 20 of 33 from the free throw line, and pulled down 46 rebounds.  The Lady Knights held a 20-2 advantage in second chance points.  LCA shot 28.6% from the field, connected on eight of 12 free throws, and pulled down 28 rebounds.

Keyla Snowden led the victors with 14 points and five steals.  Nikki Davis added 13 points, five rebounds, six assists, and four steals.  Shannon Novosel chipped in with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals.  Anaris Sickles was also a force in the paint with eight points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots.  Emily London led LCA with 10 points.  5-9 Jr. Noell Jones came off the bench to add six points.

West Jessamine’s Michael Spann hit a jump shot with four seconds remaining in overtime to give the Colts a 56-53 victory over Lexington Catholic.  West Jessamine led 34-24 at the end of three quarters but Lexington Catholic stormed back and the Knights 5-10 Sr. guard Chad Buchignani sent the game to overtime with a layup at the buzzer.

West Jessamine shot 48.6% from the field, connected on 19 of 29 free throws and pulled down 34 rebounds.  West Jessamine scored 16 points off 15 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  Lexington Catholic shot 37.7% from the field, connected on 10 of 14 free throws and pulled down 25 rebounds.  The Knights scored 24 points off 22 West Jessamine turnovers.

Michael Spann led West Jessamine with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Trevor Gray added 12 points and Brian Johnson chipped in with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals.  Cornell Burbage led Lexington Catholic with 14 points, five assists, and three steals.  Rob Riddell added 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with over five minutes remaining in regulation.

Conclusion

The Lexington Catholic Lady Knights improved their record to 29-1 and rolled through district competition on their way to the regional tournament.  West Jessamine captured their first district title in 15 years with a victory over Lexington Catholic to capture the boys’ title.
