Henry Clay (19-2) at Bryan Station (13-5)
Bryan Station played Henry Clay at Paul L. Dunbar High School tonight. The Defenders are without a home gym this season because of construction at the high school and their “home” games are played at various locations around town.
It was a very emotional night for Bryan Station as they were playing without their coach Champ Ligon Jr., whose father died Wednesday night. Assistant coach Bill Brown assumed head coaching duties for tonight’s game.
Henry Clay coach Kirk Chiles started the following lineup: 6-0 Sr. Bryan Turnage, 6-3 Fr. Aaron Boyd, 6-2 Jr. Aaron Miller, 5-9 Sr. Noade Day, and 6-2 Jr. Aaron Dunaway. Bryan Station coach Bill Brown countered with 6-1 Sr. Martin Ashford, 6-2 Jr. Brandon Watts, 6-4 So. Jaron Jones, 5-11 Sr. D. J. Adams, and 5-8 Sr. Tino Washington.
Henry Clay survived a two overtime nail-biter to defeat Bryan Station 77-74. Bryan Station had opportunities to win the game both in regulation and overtime, but was foiled by two blocks by Bryan Turnage. Henry Clay took over in the second overtime and managed to survive a late three point barrage by Bryan Station to secure the victory. Henry Clay has earned three hard-fought battles over Bryan Station this season.
Henry Clay shot 46.9% from the field, including seven of 14 from three point land. The Blue Devils connected on 24 of 38 free throws and pulled down 41 rebounds. Henry Clay scored 24 points off 27 Bryan Station turnovers. Bryan Station shot 40% from the field, including nine of 26 from the beyond the arc. The Defenders connected on 13 of 20 free throws and pulled down 30 rebounds. Bryan Station scored 34 points off 31 Henry Clay turnovers and held a 30-4 advantage in bench scoring.
Aaron Dunaway led Henry Clay with 23 points including three three point baskets. Dunaway dished out five assists and was only charged with one turnover against the tenacious Bryan Station defense. Aaron Miller added 19 points and nine rebounds while Aaron Boyd chipped in with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Noade Day also added 12 points and Bryan Turnage had a “busy” statline with seven points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, four blocks, eight steals, and was charged with 15 turnovers.
Bryan Station was led by Tino Washington with 18 points including five three point baskets. Brandon Watts, 5-11 Sr. Jarod Gay, and 6-1 Fr. Shelvin Mack added 14, 14, and 10 points respectively.
