Sunday February 6th - Day 4
(Championship)
Game No. 15 Clinton County (20-3) vs. Christian Academy of Louisville (20-3) Championship
Clinton County coach Ronnie Guffey started the following lineup: 5-8 Sr. Brittany Abbott, 5-6 Jr. Jessica Cummings, 5-10 Sr. Dorothy Papineau, 5-8 Sr. Paige Guffey, and 5-7 Sr. Amber Guffey. Christian Academy of Louisville coach Don Rice countered with 5-10 Sr. Ali Shubert, 5-9 Sr. Kristen Blake, 6-2 Sr. Maggie McKemie, 5-10 Sr. Jessie Marshall, and 5-8 Jr. Merideth Marsh.
Christian Academy of Louisville’s Maggie McKemie nailed a jump shot in the lane with slightly over three seconds remaining in the game to give her team a 34-32 victory over Clinton County. The Lady Bulldogs had one last chance to tie the game with 1.4 seconds remaining in the game. However, the inbounds pass was thrown out of bounds, ensuring the victory and championship for CAL. Although there were several individual heroes, the CAL defense made the difference in the entire tourney.
Christian Academy of Louisville shot 39.4% from the field, connected on seven of nine free throws, and pulled down 15 rebounds. Clinton County was 38.7% from the field, connected on four of six free throws, and grabbed 25 rebounds.
Ali Shubert continued her excellent tourney play by leading CAL with 13 points. Merideth Marsh added 11 points and Maggie McKemie chipped in with nine points and six rebounds. Amber and Paige Guffey led Clinton County with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Conclusion
This was an excellent tournament and an outstanding week of basketball. Christian
Academy of Louisville concluded an excellent tourney run with a championship
and displayed excellent team defense. CAL reached another milestone early this year by defeating Sacred Heart
Academy to end their 100-game winning streak against in-state competition. Coach Don Rice and his staff did an excellent
job preparing their team against some excellent competition. CAL is led by their point guard Merideth
Marsh and Maggie McKemie who both deservedly made All Tournament despite
Ms. McKemie being hampered by a mask worn to protect a broken nose. Ali Shubert, in my humble
opinion, should also have been selected for the All Tournament squad.
Clinton County played well this week and barely missed making it three in a row. Paige and Amber Guffey are as good as advertised and Coach Ronnie Guffey made some excellent coaching decisions throughout the tournament. Clinton County’s Dorothy Papineau embodies the phrase “blue collar player”. She scores a few points, grabs a few rebounds, plays sound interior defense, sets picks and screens—and wins.
Covington Holy Cross and Lexington Christian Academy played well and LCA’s So. guard Emily London played well, making All Tournament. It was touching to witness the emotion displayed by Sr. Camille Cook after she fouled out in Whitesburg’s quarterfinal loss to LCA. Ms. Cook left the game in tears knowing that her run in the All “A” Classic was over and that her school Whitesburg would be swallowed up by consolidation next year.
This event was special and very touching for me. I graduated from a school many years ago with a senior class of 37 students. This tournament truly epitomizes the ideals and standards that the founders wisely saw in their crystal ball several years ago. The talent was excellent, the fan support outstanding, and several of these teams should challenge for regional championships and berths in the Sweet 16 later this season. Congratulations to all for a job well done.
Acknowledgements
A special thanks to All “A” Classic Secretary and Media Coordinator Mike Reeves for the hospitality extended me during the many hours spent at this event. Also a note of appreciation to David Parke, Coordinator of Arena Facilities and to Hugh Davis and the Eastern Kentucky University stats crew and All “A” Committee. The All “A” Classic in my opinion is first class and is one of the most enjoyable events I have ever attended or worked.
Also, kudos to Mike Reeves and everyone contributing to the allaclassic.org website. It was extremely well done with tons of comprehensive and very timely information.
