Assumption (13-9) at Mercy Academy (19-8) (Girls)
Assumption coaches Bob and Martha Todd started the following lineup: 5-11 Jr. Kelly Mitchell, 6-0 So. Thia Gholson, 6-1 Jr. Amber Norton, 5-8 So. Eileen Kennedy, and 5-8 Sr. Kelly Miller. Mercy Academy coach Mark Evans countered with 5-8 Jr. Melissa Schindler, 5-11 Jr. Jenny Petrie, 5-10 Sr. Sha’Lori Moore, 5-8 Sr. Courtney Hall, and 5-7 Jr. Mallory Luckett.
Assumption's 5-7 So. Amanda Stovall hit a field goal, was fouled and hit the ensuing free throw with nine seconds left in the second overtime to defeat Mercy Academy 92-89. This game proved to be al foulfest as Mercy picked up 32 fouls and lost Mallory Luckett, Jenny Petrie, and Sha’Lori Moore via the foul route, while Liz Todd, Kelly Mitchell, and Amber Norton were whistled to the sidelines for Assumption, which picked up 29 personal fouls.
Assumption raced out to a 35-21 lead at halftime. The Rockets largest lead in the first half was 17, 31-14, with 2:22 left in the period. Mercy rallied in the third quarter to only trail 51-45 at the end of three quarters. Mercy continued to chip away in the final period and took a 70-68 lead on a three point basket by Courtney Hall with 1:06 remaining in regulation. Amber Norton hit two free throws for Assumption to tie the score 70-70 with 1:03 left and the score remained tied at the end of regulation.
Mercy Academy’s Courtney Hall nailed two free throws with four seconds remaining in overtime to knot the score at 82 and force a second overtime. Thia Gholson tied the score 89-89 for Assumption with a free throw setting the stage for Amanda Stovall’s late heroics.
Assumption shot 46.9% from the field, connected on 29 of 44 free throws, and pulled down 59 rebounds. Assumption scored 24 points off 19 Mercy turnovers and held a 24-15 advantage in second chance points. Mercy Academy shot 36.9% from the field including 12 of 30 from the three point line. The Jaguars were 29 of 44 from the free throw line and pulled down 33 rebounds. Mercy Academy scored 34 points off 29 Assumption turnovers.
Amber Norton led Assumption with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Mitchell added 18 points and Thia Gholson chipped in with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Courtney Hall led Mercy with 28 points including four three point baskets and 12 rebounds. Mallory Luckett added 24 points including five three point baskets.
