*Tournament MVP Daniel Harmon set two records: career points in middle school state tournament (169) and total points in one tournament (100).  He is also the first player to be named to the all-tournament team twice (2003, 2005).

Conclusion

I have attempted to give a brief recap of each game played in this tourney.  I apologize in advance for any misspelled names or errors in players’ heights or stats as I hurriedly transcribed stats from the scorebooks.  This report is meant to be an overview of the tourney and not an instrument for ascertaining precise individual records.

Congratulations to Virgie for winning the championship and to both Jackson Street and Virgie for providing us an excellent championship game. The records of the teams advancing to the final eight were as follows:  Dorton (35-8), Jackson Street (16-0), Madison (32-0), Carr Creek (35-6), Mason County (29-0), Leestown (13-0), Grayson County (34-2), and Virgie (36-1).  Virgie utilized an excellent interior passing game and a strong defense to post victories over Corbin, Garrard County, Bate, Johnson County, Grayson County, Leestown, and Jackson Street in this tournament.

There were many fine teams and too many excellent players to mention them all here.  There was much thought put into selecting the All Tournament Team but with only fifteen slots available, many fine players were left off the team.  Dakotah Euton (Rose Hill), Rashaun Phillips (Bardstown), Nick Hudson (Leestown), and Chad Jackson (Rose Hill) are just a few of the other players who impressed observers this week.

This was a well-balanced tourney field with several teams having a legitimate shot at the title.  The pipeline continues for high schools in the state with many of these players destined to make their mark at the varsity level in the near future.  It is obvious from covering this event that the future of basketball in Kentucky is extremely bright.  The future of this event is also bright and the Kentucky Basketball Academy will strive to improve this event each year.

Some of the past members of the All-Tournament Team who have moved on to star at the varsity level in high school include Aaron Dunaway (Henry Clay), Andrew Howard and Jay Ivey (Owensboro Catholic), Rodney Haddix (Scott County), Ty Proffitt and Jordan Hammonds (South Laurel), Jonathan Mackey (Scott County), and Clark Stepp (June Buchanan).
