Congratulations to Lexington Catholic AD/Coach Greg Todd and the tournament sponsors for putting together such a first class event.  Also, congratulations to coach Donna Moir and the Sacred Heart Valkyries for another excellent tournament run.

Does this tourney establish Sacred Heart as a “lock” for their third consecutive state title?  Even though they look dominating at times, there are challengers on the horizon.  Christian County is loaded with talent and a young Lexington Catholic squad took the Valkyries to the wire in the championship game.  Mercy Academy had a quality win over Christian County and Mercer County defeated a very good Rockcastle County team.

There were several excellent teams and too many players to mention them all here.  The “stars” lived up to their sizeable reputations and it was great to see stars and future stars from all parts of the state this week.  Everyone on the All Tourney team was very deserving, but for a tournament of this size and caliber there were several other players who easily could have made the team.  5-11 Jr. Julie Leach played well for Ohio County and 5-10 Jr. Tara Rowe also had a good week.

Fans in all sections of the state will be treated to some excellent basketball.  Newport Central Catholic has an excellent duo in Nicole Chiodi and Jayme Thiem.  Western Kentucky was well represented in this tourney.  Christian County and Henderson County should battle for supremacy in their region.  Rockcastle County should battle Jackson County for the 13th Region title, and Mercer County should have an excellent year.  Barren County is led by Patrika Barlow, an exciting point guard who has committed to play at Louisville.

I appreciate the hospitality extended me by Greg Todd and his staff.  It is a difficult job keeping an event of this magnitude together.  Also a special debt of gratitude to Glenn Gentry and Gary Long for  providing stats for this tourney.  Between these two gentlemen and Bob Tonini of Sacred Heart, stats were available and made coverage of this event possible.  As usual, I enjoyed visiting with Louis Meadows and Chris Lovelace–true fans of the ladies’ game in Kentucky.  This is an outstanding tournament and a real “must-see” event.
