Woodford County (17-7) at Henry Clay (16-5)
Woodford County coach Jay Lucas started the following lineup: 5-7 So. Amber Penny, 5-7 Jr. Beth Nunnelley, 5-11 Sr. Blythe Brown, 5-7 So. Brittany Henderlight, and 5-7 7th grade Katy Cooke. Henry Clay coach Scott Cromwell countered with 6-0 Sr. Mary Tobin, 5-8 So. Erica Coleman, 6-1 Sr. Abby Currens, 5-7 Sr. Jessie Birdwhistell, and 5-3 Sr. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle.
Henry Clay raced out to a 19-0 lead but had to survive a furious Woodford County rally to capture an 80-65 victory. Woodford County pulled to within three, 45-42, in the third quarter, but could never complete the comeback. Woodford County has been without their star 5-9 Jr. Destiny Mattingly because of a knee injury. Coach Lucas did an excellent job tonight when the team got down 19-0 and the players showed a lot of heart and determination. Henry Clay is not an average team, but a very good team that has developed depth over the season and could be a major threat come tourney time.
Jessie Birdwhistell and Johnna Lewis-Carlisle led Henry Clay with 19 and 17 points respectively. Erica Coleman and 5-4 So. Lamisha Storey added 14 and 12 points respectively. Woodford County was hampered tonight by foul woes but got some excellent play off the bench. Brittany Henderlight and Katy Cooke led Woodford County with 20 and 10 points respectively. Coach Lucas would probably like to have his team’s free throw shooting game every night as I had them unofficially connecting on 24 of 28 from the line. I had Henry Clay connecting on 22 of 40 from the line.
