This tournament is in its ninth year and is already rich in tradition. Past champions have been Madison Central (1995-1996), Bryan Station (1996-1997), Scott County (1997-1998), Scott County (1998-1999), Scott County (1999-2000), Scott County (2000-2001), Scott County (2001-2002) and Dixie Heights (2002-2003). A good field has been assembled this year to play for the championship. This year's field will consist of the following teams: Apollo, Covington Catholic, Gainesville (FL), George Junior Republic (PA), Henry Clay, Johnson Central, Lafayette, and Scott County. There will also be a special Toyota Invitational game matching the Pike County Central Lady Hawks against the Scott County Lady Cardinals.
January 28th - Day 1
Game No. 1 Johnson Central (9-7) vs. Scott County (14-3)
Johnson Central coach Les Trimble started the following lineup: 6-3 Jr. Tony Hatfield, 6-2 So. Kyle Rice, 6-4 Jr. Josh Stapleton, 6-2 Jr. Nick Music, and 6-1 Sr. Mike Walters. Scott County coach Billy Hicks countered with 6-5 Jr. Anthony Coote, 6-8 Sr. Zach Van Guilder, 6-4 Sr. Alex Cassady, 6-1 Sr. Troy Harris, and 6-0 Sr. Tyler Hicks.
Scott County scored 43 points on 26 Johnson Central turnovers on their way to a 92-55 victory. Scott County shot 51.4% from the field, was 11 of 12 from the free throw line, and pulled down 48 rebounds. Johnson Central shot 31% from the field, visited the free throw line 21 times, connecting on 12 shots, and grabbed 34 rebounds.
Scott County had five players in double figures, led by Tyler Hicks with 18 points. Alex Cassady, Troy Harris, and Zach Van Guilder added 15, 12 and 10 points respectively. 6-1 Fr. Rodney Haddix also tallied 10 points. Zach Van Guilder pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. 6-2 Fr. Jamie McCarty led Johnson Central with 16 points. Nick Music added 12 points. Kyle Rice chipped in with eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.

George Junior Republic held a 48-26 rebound advantage over Henry Clay on their way to an 87-68 victory. The victors were led today by Tyrae Denmark with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Brandon Shores added 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds while Marcus Daniels chipped in with 22 points including four three point baskets.
Henry Clay was led by Noade Day with 18 points including five of eight three point attempts. Aubrey White added 13 points but encountered foul problems and only played a total of 13:27. Brandon Coles, Bryan Turnage, and Chase Mitchell added 11, 11, and 10 points respectively.

Johnson Central led 73-72 late in the game but Henry Clay rallied to claim a 77-73 victory. Both teams shot well tonight with Henry Clay shooting 57.4% from the field and connecting on 12 of 14 free throws while Johnson Central shot 52.2% from the field and was 17 of 21 from the charity stripe. Johnson Central was eight of 19 from the three point line. Henry Clay held a 29-18 advantage in rebounding and outscored Johnson Central 29-0 from the bench.
Henry Clay was led by Aubrey White with 27 points, 10 rebounds, and eight steals. 6-2 So. Aaron Miller came off the bench to add 21 points and nine rebounds. Mike Walters led Johnson Central with 25 points including six three point goals. Tony Hatfield, Nick Music, and Josh Stapleton added 17, 12, and 10 points respectively.

Gainesville led 46-41 at the end of three quarters but Covington Catholic rallied in the final period to earn a 64-61 victory. Covington Catholic held a 54.2%-38.6% advantage in field goal shooting. Gainesville outscored Covington Catholic 18-9 from the three point line.
Covington Catholic was led by Matt Nestheide with 22 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Ryan Kennedy and Ross Votel added 11 points each. Ron Larris led Gainesville with 25 points including four three point baskets and recorded five steals. Jonathan Cook and Ron Rawls added 10 points each.

Apollo outlasted Lafayette to take a 99-93 victory in two overtimes. Ryne Mantooth nailed a three-pointer for Apollo to tie the score at 76-76 in regulation to force overtime. Mantooth hit a three-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining in the first overtime to knot the score at 86-86 and force the second overtime. Apollo shot 50.7% from the field, connected on 21 of 31 from the free throw line, and pulled down 44 rebounds. The Eagles were 10 of 25 from the three point line. Lafayette shot 50% from the field, was 11 of 24 from the three point line, and pulled down 43 rebounds.
Apollo was led by today by Ryne Mantooth with 27 points, including six three point baskets. Richard Long added 21 points and seven assists while 5-11 So. Jake Wells chipped in with 20 points. Travis Johnson added 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Darnell Dialls led Lafayette with 32 points, 19 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Marcus Barron added 21 points and dished out seven assists. Nic Mullins and 6-0 So. Pete Gifford added 18 and 13 points respectively.

Gainesville led 33-30 at halftime but Lafayette rallied in the second half to earn a 67-57 victory. Lafayette shot 53.8% from the field, was eight of 12 from the free throw line, and grabbed 34 rebounds while Gainesville was 37.7% from the field, five of 11 from the free throw line, and pulled down 32 rebounds. Gainesville scored 19 points off 20 Lafayette turnovers, while Lafayette scored 13 points off 18 Gainesville miscues.
The victors were led tonight by Darnell Dialls with 30 points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots. Nic Mullins added 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and dished out five assists. Jonathan Cook led Gainesville with 21 and six rebounds. Rahim Barnes and Ron Rawls each tallied nine points and Rawls pulled down nine rebounds.

Scott County led 56-45 in the final period but had to survive a rally by George Junior Republic to earn a 70-65 victory. George Junior Republic pulled to within one, 56-55, but Scott County’s Troy Harris nailed two consecutive three point baskets to allow Scott County to regain control. Scott County shot 35.3% from the field, was 14 of 21 from the free throw line, and pulled down 43 rebounds. George Junior Republic was 36.4% from the field, but was only 12 of 33 from the free throw line, including one of 10 in the first half, and pulled down 48 rebounds.
Scott County was led by Troy Harris with 23 points, including five three point baskets. Tyler Hicks added 13 points and Alex Cassady chipped in with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Scott County outscored George Junior Republic 22-6 from the bench and included nine points each by 7-0 Jr. Jared Carter and 5-11 Sr. Ryan Bailey. Tyrae Denmark led George Junior Republic with 19 points and eight rebounds. Robert Davis added 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Marcus Daniels and Terrence Roberts chipped in with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Covington Catholic outscored Apollo 11-2 in the second quarter on their way to an 84-69 victory. Covington Catholic outshot Apollo 41.7%-34.3% from the field, outscored Apollo 31-15 from the free throw line, and held a 48-37 advantage in rebounds. Covington Catholic was 31 of 36 from the free throw line, including 27 of 32 in the second half, while Apollo was 15 of 21 from the charity stripe.
All five Covington Catholic starters scored in double figures, led by Ryan Kennedy and Stephen Muck with 21 and 18 points respectively. Brennan Votel added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots, while Matt Nestheide chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Ross Votel tallied 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Travis Johnson led Apollo with 26 points and nine rebounds. Richard Long added 16 points and nine rebounds while Ryne Mantooth chipped in with 10 points.

Gainesville shot 50.9% from the field, was 18 of 28 from the free throw line, and pulled down 28 rebounds. The Hurricanes were 10 of 20 from three point line. Johnson Central shot 46.7% from the field, was 21 of 27 from the free throw line, and pulled down 30 rebounds.
The victors were led by Ron Larris with 25 points including four three point goals, and dished out eight assists. Ron Rawls added 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Gene Martin chipped in with 14 points. Mike Walters led Johnson Central with 23 points including four three point baskets. Nick Music added 22 points including 15 of 16 free throws. Kyle Rice chipped in with 12 points.

Lafayette held a 52.8%-48.4% advantage in field goal shooting and was 22 of 28 from the free throw line while Henry Clay was 20 of 27 from the charity stripe.
Henry Clay was led by Brandon Coles with 24 points. Aubrey White added 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. 6-2 So. Aaron Miller added 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Chase Mitchell chipped in with 10 points. Nic Mullins led Lafayette with 21 points and 6-0 So. Pete Gifford chipped in with 20 points including 11 of 12 free throws. Darnell Dialls tallied 19 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and blocked four shots.

George Junior Republic shot 45.9% from the field, was 27 of 36 from the free throw line, and pulled down 46 rebounds. Apollo shot 42.9% from the field, connected on 19 of 24 free throws, and grabbed 26 rebounds. Apollo held a 33-21 advantage in three point goals.
The victors were led by Tyrae Denmark with 33 points and 11 rebounds. Robert Davis added 19 points and 13 rebounds while Brandon Shores chipped in with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Marcus Daniels also reached double figures with 10 points. Ryne Mantooth led Apollo with 29 points including seven three point goals. Richard Long added 20 points and dished out eight assists. Ben Duvall and 6-4 Sr. Travis Johnson chipped in with 10 points each.

Game No. 13 Covington Catholic (13-2) vs. Scott County (16-3) (Championship Game)
Covington Catholic coach Mike Listerman started the following lineup: 6-4 Sr. Stephen Muck, 6-4 Sr. Ross Votel, 6-5 Jr. Brennan Votel, 5-11 Sr. Ryan Kennedy, and 6-0 Sr. Matt Nestheide. Scott County coach Billy Hicks countered with 6-5 Jr. Anthony Coote, 6-8 Sr. Zach Van Guilder, 6-4 Sr. Alex Cassady, 6-1 Sr. Troy Harris, and 6-0 Sr. Tyler Hicks.
Scott County trailed 67-62 with less than a minute remaining on the clock but rallied to defeat Covington Catholic 70-68 to claim the Toyota Classic Championship. Tyler Hicks was only three of 15 from the field but nailed two long three-pointers to tie the score at 68-68. Troy Harris made a steal and hit what proved to be the winning layup with 11 seconds remaining on the clock. Scott County shot 42.1% from the field, was 16 of 24 from the free throw line, and pulled down 33 rebounds. Covington Catholic shot 43.9% from the field, connected on 13 of 21 free throws, and pulled down 39 rebounds.
Scott County was led by Troy Harris and Alex Cassady with 22 and 18 points respectively. Tyler Hicks added 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Ryan Kennedy led Covington Catholic with 20 points. Brennan Votel added 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Stephen Muck chipped in with 10 points.

Conclusion
Congratulations to Scott County for capturing the championship over a strong field this year. There were some excellent games played this week with some thrilling finishes. Several players stepped up this week and had excellent performances. Scott County’s Tyler Hicks put in a gutty effort in the championship game. Hicks had missed 12 of his first 13 shots but he still had the courage to pull the trigger and nail two long three pointers in the final minute to tie the game, setting the stage for Troy Harris’s final heroics. Hicks also scrapped inside for 11 rebounds.
Acknowledgments
Congratulations to the Toyota Classic Committee and all the volunteers who make this tournament such a success. Also a special thanks to WL Stats for providing the computer stats for all the games. Once again, the Toyota Classic recognizes all the Jr. and Sr. participants with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
