Lafayette (2-2) at Henry Clay (4-0)
Lafayette coach Damon Kelley started the following lineup: 6-6 Sr. Nic Mullins, 6-0 Jr. T. J. Chinn, 6-8 Sr. Darnell Dialls, 5-11 Sr. Kevin Trahan, and 6-1 Sr. Marcus Barron. Henry Clay coach Kirk Chiles countered with 6-0 Jr. Bryan Turnage, 6-0 Sr. Chase Mitchell, 6-3 Sr. Aubrey White, 5-10 Sr. Brandon Coles, and 5-8 Jr. Noade Day.
Lafayette survived a wild-west shootout to defeat Henry Clay 85-82 in two overtimes. Henry Clay’s Aubrey White, who had been averaging over 25 ppg, got in early foul trouble and didn’t score his first basket until midway through the fourth quarter. Some excellent long-range bombing by Noade Day and Brandon Coles allowed the Blue Devils to lead at the first three quarter stops by scores of 18-14, 36-30, and 43-41. Lafayette took a 58-55 lead late in the game but Noade Day hit a three point shot with eleven seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and Lafayette missed a last second leaner to send the game to overtime.
Henry Clay took a 67-60 lead in the first overtime, but Lafayette charged back to take a 69-67 lead. Aubrey White hit a nifty spin move in the lane to tie the game 69-69 at the buzzer. Lafayette’s Marcus Barron took over in the second overtime, scoring eight points as Lafayette took an 85-82 victory. Nothing came easy tonight as Lafayette held an 83-79 lead but Brandon Coles hit a three pointer to cut the margin to 83-82. Lafayette got the ball inside to Darnell Dialls who threw down a dunk with seven seconds remaining for the final score.
Lafayette held a 60.8%-40% advantage from the field but was outrebounded 40-33 by Henry Clay. Lafayette was 19 of 29 from the free throw line while Henry Clay visited the charity stripe 24 times, connecting on 14 shots. Henry Clay also connected on 12 of 31 from the three point line. Lafayette scored 29 points off 28 Henry Clay turnovers while Henry Clay scored 24 points off 25 Lafayette miscues.
Lafayette was led tonight by Marcus Barron with 26 points, six rebounds, and six assists. 6-4 Jr. Blake Miller came off the bench to add 22 points. Darnell Dialls had 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Henry Clay was led by Brandon Coles with 27 points, including six three point goals. Noade Day added 20 points including five baskets from behind the arc. Chase Mitchell, Bryan Turnage, and Aubrey White chipped in with 14, 11, and 10 points respectively. White also pulled down nine rebounds.
