Twenty-two teams will have the opportunity to play at Rupp Arena on November 29th.  The teams scheduled to perform are: Henry Clay, Grant County, Powell County, Lexington Christian Academy, Western Hills, Bourbon County, Mercer County, Hart County, Clark County, Meade County, Lafayette, Shelby Valley, Bryan Station, Perry County Central, Paul Dunbar, South Oldham, Tates Creek, Clay County, Pleasure Ridge Park, Scott County, Lexington Catholic, and South Laurel.  The event is the brainchild of the Kentucky Basketball Academy, and as the president of KBA Terry Hatton commented, “What a better way to start the season.”

The rules for this event are as follows:

I will, for the sake of clarity, give scores for both halves, plus a combined score.  These will be scores that are on the arena scoreboard.  Any stats included are not official but were recorded by me personally and should be fairly accurate.  Please understand that these are scrimmages, and coaches are experimenting with substitution rotations and are using this event as a teaching tool and to prepare for the upcoming season.

Conclusion

This was an excellent day of pre-season basketball.  The coaches did an excellent job of using this event as a teaching tool and they managed to give as many players as possible the opportunity to play on this floor.  Some of these players will probably be back for the Sweet 16 in March, but for many of these players it could be the only opportunity they will have to compete at Rupp Arena.  I began my love affair with basketball over 45 years ago on a small farm in Kentucky sitting around a coal stove on a cold winter evening listening to the exploits of the Kentucky Wildcats on an old radio.  It was a thrill for me to walk out on the floor the current Wildcats call home before the games actually started on Saturday morning.

There were too many teams and players to mention here but there were some teams that appeared to be in mid-season form.  Some teams were experimenting with player rotations and several teams were still integrating players into the lineup that have just finished the football season.  Lexington Catholic appears to be playing well and they definitely appear hungry, which could be a dangerous combination for their rivals.  Scott County has a good combination of veterans and newcomers and was very impressive.  Lafayette’s 6-8 Sr. Darnell Dialls was hampered by foul problems today but he should have a “breakout” campaign this season..
