PARTICIPATING TEAMS

Jeffersontown

The Lady Chargers are coached by Kim Messer.  They are defending district champs and play an up-tempo style.  5-10 Jr. Danielle Lascoe mans a forward position and is the leading returning scorer.  Lascoe is very athletic and can shoot the ball.  5-9 So. Ciara Webster, a power forward/center is an excellent jumper, good at put backs, and has a “scorer’s mentality”.   5-4 Sr. point guard Natalie Rice led the team in assists and can shoot the three ball.  5-5 Sr. guard Abigail Hardy is a good athlete and excellent leader who could be the Lady Chargers’ best defender.  5-6 Jr. Jenna Williams can penetrate as well as shoot the three ball, and can play either the 1, 2, or 3 position.  5-8 Jr. Eboney Johnson is very quick and slashes well to the basket.

Fairdale

The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Larry Bruner.  This team should be led by five solid seniors:  6-0 Reva Tyus, 5-10 Kaya Stephenson, 5-8 Sheila Taylor, 5-4 Heather Greschel, and 4-11 Tish Gray.  The strengths of this team should be experience, quickness, and numbers.

Dawson Springs

The Lady Panthers are coached by Norman Manasco and should be led by 5-7 Sr. Keila Smiley.  The Panthers have some good young talent coming down the road including 5-7 So. Amanda Carlton, 5-5 Fr. Brittney Chappell, and 5-8 Fr. Ashli Lanham.

Louisville Seneca

The Seneca Lady Redhawks are coached by Lou Sartori.  5-7 So. Latasha Harrison brings quickness and athletic ability to the team.  Harrison received considerable playing time last year as a freshman.  5-8 Sr. wing player Beth Daunhauer is very athletic and led the team in scoring last year with a 12.2 ppg.  Daunhauer shot 72.9% from the free throw line.  Crystal Rohmann is a 5-6 Sr. point guard who can shoot the trey and averaged 11 ppg last season.  Alix Messersmith is a 6-1 Jr. center who has only played four years of organized ball but had an excellent summer attending four different camps.  This should be a good shooting team with several players moving up from freshman and JV teams who posted winning records last season.

Madison Central

The Lady Indians are coached by Kent Miller and are the defending 11th Region runner-up.  They lose Jeannie Vorbeck and Tiffany Green but return All-Region performer 5-8 Jr. guard Olivia Terry.  Terry has been a double digit scorer since the 8th grade and should only get better each year.  5-4 Sr. Heather Rose and 5-5 Sr. Lori Parsons also started last season.

Louisville Male

The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Leslie Scully.  Male graduated two Kentucky All-Stars in 5-10 Connie Neal and 6-0 Sharell Snardon.  Coach Scully always comes up with good athletes and the Lady Bulldogs should be led this year by 5-10 Sr. Brandy Denning, 5-5 Sr. Stacey Gillette, 5-10 Jr. Megan Hix, and 5-9 Jr. Veronica Hudson.   Coach Scully is also high on two talented freshmen: 5-10 Whitney Hodge, and 5-7 Kristi White.

DuPont Manual

The Lady Crimsons are coached by Mina Todd and should have an excellent team again this year.  6-2 Jr. center Sarah McKemie is extremely tough in the paint and rebounds well.  6-1 Jr. Candyce Bingham has size and all the tools necessary to be an outstanding backcourt player.  6-0 So. Maggie McKemie and 6-0 Sr. Ellen Doolittle are also expected to be key contributors for the Lady Crimsons.  This team could be a force this season if they get consistent point guard play.

Pleasure Ridge Park

The Lady Panthers are coached by Craig Webb and should have another outstanding season.  They should be led this season by their outstanding guard combination of 5-8 Sr. Kellie Peyton and 5-6 Jr. Anitha Williams.  Peyton is one of the state’s top sharpshooters and can light up the scoreboard.  Williams has speed and quickness, allowing her to do an excellent job of creating offense for ther teammates.  5-7 So. Alisa Pierce, 6-0 Jr. Chelsea Bibelhauser, 5-10 Sr. Natalie Neal, 5-7 So. Quinetta Nelson, 5-9 Jr. Michelle Reichle, and 5-6 Jr. Kelly Thieneman are all expected to contribute this season.  PRP also has three new players expected to contribute this season:  5-10 Sr. Lauren Weber (transfer from Presentation), 5-9 Jr. Andrea Bishop (transfer from Holy Rosary), and 5-6 Fr. Janay Jones.  PRP will have one of the best backcourts in the state and if they can develop a deep rotation should challenge for regional honors again this year.

This should be an excellent day of basketball concluding with the battle between DuPont Manual and Pleasure Ridge Park.  These two teams should be ranked in the pre-season polls with several players on the rosters who should eventually be playing at the collegiate level.

Stephenson, Tyus, and Taylor also rebounded well, especially in the second half.  Jeffersontown was led by their game MVP Danielle Lascoe, who tallied 25 points.  Coach Messer is playing a bit short-handed as Ciara Webster and Jenna Williams, two players counted on to be key contributors this season, are currently not with the team.  5-8 Jr. Eboney Johnson also missed the scrimmage due to an injury.

Conclusion

This was an excellent day of pre-season basketball, with attention being given to every detail from an organizational aspect.  The JV teams played in an adjoining gym and was also well attended.  The coaches did an excellent job of using this event as a teaching tool.  There was some excellent talent on display today both veteran and underclassmen.  While there were several performances worth noting, that of Madison Central’s Olivia Terry stands out.  Ms. Terry lit up the scoreboard for 39 points and impressed observers with her athleticism.  DuPont Manual could make waves if Coach Mina Todd can get consistent guard play.  The Lady Crimsons are tall, talented, and have only two seniors on the squad—they will only get better.  I was also impressed with Coach Norman Manasco’s Dawson Springs Lady Panthers.  This is a young team, but Coach Manasco stresses ball movement and these young ladies can shoot the ball.

The Inaugural Fairdale/High Potential Hooparama was an excellent day of basketball and hopefully will become an annual event.
