42nd District Tournament

The 42nd District boys’ tourney, barring a major upset, should come down to a battle between Lexington Catholic and West Jessamine. They have played twice this year, with each team claiming a decision. Lexington Catholic will meet East Jessamine in one semifinal while West Jessamine will meet the winner of the Sayre vs. Lexington Christian Academy matchup in the other semifinal.
The The 42nd District girls’ tourney crown should belong to Lexington Catholic barring an upset of monumental proportions. The Lady Knights are one of the top teams in the state and appear to be peaking at tourney time. Lexington Christian Academy will meet East Jessamine in one semifinal while Lexington Catholic will meet the winner of the Sayre vs. West Jessamine matchup in the other semifinal.
Monday, March 3rd
Sayre (19-7) vs. Lexington Christian Academy (12-13) (Boys)
Sayre coach Gene Kirk started the following lineup: 6-2 So. Alex McIntyre, 6-4 Sr. Hunter Simms, 6-0 Jr. Doug Arnold, 6-1 Sr. Vinnie Tew, and 5-10 Sr. Garth Waterfield. Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands countered with 6-5 So. Nick Maloy, 6-3 Sr. Tyler Morris, 6-4 Sr. Matt Vogel, 5-11 Sr. Drew Breaux, and 5-10 Sr. Jordan Haffley.
Lexington Christian Academy blitzed Sayre early with a three point barrage (five for eight) to take a 31-12 lead, then survived a furious rally to earn a 71-63 victory. Lexington Christian held a 45.7%-38.3% edge in field goal shooting but was outrebounded 42-20. Lexington Christian scored 21 points off 19 Sayre turnovers. Both teams were effective from the charity stripe, with Lexington Christian going 20 for 26 (76.9%) while Sayre visited the line 32 times, connecting on 24 shots (75%).
Lexington Christian was led tonight by Matt Vogel with 17 points
including 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Jordan Haffley and Tyler
Morris added 16 and 14 points respectively. Sayre was led tonight by Alex
McIntyre with 20 points and six rebounds. Doug Arnold added 16 points and 10 rebounds while Hunter
Simms chipped in with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Sayre coach Bill Hill started the following lineup: 5-9 Sr. Catherine Heil, 5-9 Sr. Lauren Williamson, 5-8 8th grader Lizzie Youngbloood, 5-7 So. Beth Blackey, and 5-6 Jr. Mary Turner. West Jessamine coach Nikki Haverty-Smith countered with 5-6 So. Loren Bewely, 5-11 Sr. Stephanie Keeley, 5-11 Sr. Katie Ryavec, 5-4 Jr. Laresa Sallee, and 5-4 Sr. Krista Hisle.
The score was tied 23-23 at the end of three quarters but Sayre outscored West Jessamine 21-9 in the final period to take a 44-32 decision. Sayre shot 40.5% from the field, connected on 12 of 23 free throws, and pulled down 27 rebounds. West Jessamine could not find the range tonight as they were 22% from the field and only connected on four of 15 from the free throw line. West Jessamine pulled down 52 rebounds.
Sayre was led tonight by Mary Turner with 13 points, five rebounds,
and five steals. Lauren
Williamson added 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Catherine
Heil chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. West Jessamine was led by Loren Bewely and 5-10 So. Michelle
Woodrum with seven and six points respectively. Katie Ryavec added five points and pulled down
17 rebounds.

East Jessamine coach Paul Roher started the following lineup: 6-0 So. Ruth Byrd, 5-7 Sr. Jennifer Peel, 5-11 Sr. Sophia Ciric, 5-6 So. Christina Perkins, and 5-2 So. Latoya Richardson. Lexington Christian Academy coach Ralph Sallee countered with 5-8 Fr. Katie Brittain, 5-8 So. Leah Anderson, 5-7 Sr. Elisabeth Jones, 5-6 So. Kayla Yates, and 5-3 8th grader Emily London.
Lexington Christian scored 42 points on 36 East Jessamine turnovers on their
way to a 79-51 victory. Lexington
Christian shot 44.6% from the field, was 15 of 20 from the free throw line, and
pulled down 41 rebounds. East Jessamine
shot 30.8% from the field, connected on 10 of 16 free throws, and pulled down
46 rebounds. The victors were led
by Elisabeth Jones with 17 points, six rebounds, 11 assists, four
blocked shots, and nine steals. Emily
London added 16 points. Kayla
Yates, 5-11 Fr. Kirby Barnhart, and Leah Anderson added 11,
11 and 10 points respectively. East Jessamine was led by Sophia Ciric
with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals. Jennifer Peel added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Lexington Catholic coach Bart Flener countered with 6-3 Jr. Demetrius Green, 6-3 Jr. Harrison Morton, 6-4 Jr. Mark Balthrop, 6-3 Jr. William Graham, and 5-11 Sr. Brian Smith.
Lexington Catholic scored 42 points off 27 East Jessamine turnovers, and
shot 56.5% from the field including 66.7% in the first half, on their way to an
87-56 victory. East Jessamine shot
45.2% from the field, but turnovers and the torrid shooting by Lexington
Catholic were too much to overcome.
The victors were led by Harrison Morton, William Graham,
and Demetrius Green with 17, 15 and 14 points respectively. 5-10
Jr. Drew Morton, 5-10 So. P. J. Wilson, and Brian Smith
added 10, nine, and nine points respectively. East Jessamine was led by Ryan
McFarland, Scotty Foster and 6-3 Sr. Jason Webster with 13,
nine, and nine points respectively.

Lexington Christian Academy (13-13) vs. West Jessamine (14-9) (Boys)
Lexington Christian Academy coach Jason Seamands started the following lineup: 6-5 So. Nick Maloy, 6-3 Sr. Tyler Morris, 6-4 Sr. Matt Vogel, 5-11 Sr. Drew Breaux, and 5-10 Sr. Jordan Haffley. West Jessamine coach Matthew Yates countered with 6-5 Sr. Scott Tarvin, 6-2 Sr. Cameron Jackson, 6-6 Sr. Brett Johnson, 5-11 Sr. Andy Placido, and 5-11 Sr. Daniel Thompson.
The score was tied 41-41 at the end of the third quarter but West Jessamine
outscored Lexington Christian 23-15 in the final period to claim a 64-56
victory. Daniel Thompson
gave West Jessamine a spark late in the third quarter and early in the fourth
quarter by tying the game 41-41, then giving the Colts a 43-41 lead, a lead
they would not relinquish. West
Jessamine shot 48% from the field while Lexington Christian shot 39.2%. The victors were led by Daniel
Thompson and Scott Tarvin with 12 points each, while Cameron
Jackson and Brett Johnson each tallied 10 points. Andy Placido chipped in
with nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Lexington Christian was led by Tyler
Morris with 21 points and eight rebounds. Matt Vogel and Drew Breaux added 15 and 14
points respectively.

Lexington Catholic scored 48 points off 33 Sayre turnovers on their way to
an 88-19 victory. Lexington
Catholic held a 55.2%-21.9% edge in field goal shooting and outrebounded Sayre
39-19. Lexington Catholic’s Chelsea
Chowning surpassed the 2500 point mark tonight for her varsity career. The victors were led tonight by Shannon
Novosel with 20 points. 5-7
So. Lesley Server added 16 points including five three point
baskets. 5-7 Fr. Nikki Davis
added 14 points and six steals. Chelsea
Chowning chipped in with 10 points.
Sarah Schell, as usual, had a full stat line with eight points,
five rebounds, 10 assists, and three steals. Sayre was led by Catherine Heil with nine points and
six rebounds.

Lexington Catholic scored 40 points off 29 Lexington Christian turnovers and
held a 50%-33.5% edge in field goal shooting on their way to an 80-40
victory. Lexington Catholic was
led tonight by Miss Basketball candidate Chelsea Chowning with 24
points. 5-7 So. Lesley Server
added 11 points including three of her patented long-range bombs. Shannon Novosel and Sarah
Schell chipped in with 10 points each. 5-7 Fr. Nikki Davis had a nice game with eight
points, five rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Lexington Christian was led by Emily London with 14
points, including four three point goals.
Katie Brittain added nine points and pulled down six
rebounds.

Lexington Catholic scored 39 points off 24 West Jessamine turnovers and held
a 54.2%-47.7% edge in field goal shooting on their way to a 94-71 victory. West Jessamine pulled within nine,
65-56 at the end of three quarters but Lexington Catholic pulled away in the
final period. The second and
fourth periods were disastrous for West Jessamine as Lexington Catholic held
31-16 and 29-15 advantages respectively in those quarters. The victors were led tonight by Harrison
Morton, Demetrius Green, and William Graham with 29, 22 and
18 points respectively. 6-1 So. Joe Boneau came off the bench to
have a good performance with seven points. West Jessamine was led by Cameron Jackson, Daniel
Thompson, and 6-4 Sr. Ben Spann with 17, 13 and 12 points
respectively.

Conclusion
Congratulations to Coach Bart Flener and the Lexington Catholic Knights for capturing the district championship. The Knights are peaking at tourney time and Coach Flener has developed the bench, which allows them to give the starters a rest and still maintain their defensive pressure. West Jessamine was defeated handily by Lexington Catholic in the championship game but Coach Matthew Yates has a deep, veteran roster led by nine seniors. This team should be very competitive in the 11th region tournament.
Coach Greg Todd’s Lexington Catholic Lady Knights easily won the district championship and his deep, talented squad will be favored to take the 11th region tournament. If they do indeed advance to the Sweet 16, the Lady Knights will be one of the favorites to take the crown. Coach Ralph Sallee of Lexington Christian Academy has a very young squad and should have a bright future.
