Lafayette coach Damon Kelley started the following lineup: 6-0 Sr. Gene Cotton, 6-6 Sr. Kevin Grantlin, 6-8 Jr. Darnell Dialls, 5-8 Sr. Tim Bauman, and 6-0 Sr. Adam Coleman. Henry Clay coach Kirk Chiles countered with 6-1 So. Bryan Turnage, 6-2 Sr. Joe Harden, 6-9 Sr. John Patterson, 5-8 Sr. Branden Bowman, and 5-10 Sr. Lamont Campbell.
Basketball purists would say Henry Clay wins ugly but the operative word is wins. Tonight was a prime example—they only shot 36.7%, scored 27 points off 28 Lafayette turnovers, squandered a double-digit lead, but earned a 60-54 victory over Lafayette. Henry Clay was not ranked in the pre-season polls and Coach Chiles must be extremely happy with this scrappy bunch of Blue Devils, who have climbed to No. 7 in the state. Lafayette outshot Henry Clay 44.2%-36.7% from the field tonight and scored 18 points off 22 Henry Clay turnovers, but was outrebounded by a 40-35 count.
Henry Clay was led tonight by Joe Harden with 17 points. Bryan Turnage added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Lamont Campbell added 11 points and six assists. Lafayette was led by 6-0 Jr. Marcus Barron with 16 points. Kevin Grantlin added eight points and seven rebounds.
