The All “A” Classic included four girls teams in 1991. The 1992 version expanded to include eight girls teams and in 1993 the tournament again expanded to include a full complement of 16 teams. Winners crowned to date are 1991 Cumberland, 1992 Cumberland, 1993 Nicholas County, 1994 Louisville Holy Cross, 1995 Monroe County, 1996 Louisville Holy Cross, 1997 Hazard, 1998 Hazard, 1999 Bishop Brossart, 2000 Somerset, 2001 Jackson County, and 2002 Jackson County.
February 5th - Day 1
Game No. 1 Whitesburg (16-3) (Region 14) vs. West Carter (15-5) (Region 16)
Whitesburg coach Dickie Adams started the following lineup: 5-8 So. Whitney Hogg, 5-9 So. Camille Cook, 6-0 Jr. Ashley Stidham, 5-6 Sr. Chastity Fox, and 5-4 Sr. Afton Blair. West Carter coach coach John “Hop” Brown countered with 5-10 Sr. Brooke Mullis, 5-11 Fr. Brandi Rayburn, 5-11 Sr. Jenise James, 5-7 Jr. Stephanie Hall, and 5-6 Sr. Megen Gearhart.
Whitesburg led 39-35 entering the final quarter, and the score was tied 49-49 with 1:12 remaining in the game before West Carter hit six of six free throws to give them a 55-51 victory. Whitesburg maintained a 40%-37.3% edge in field goal shooting and outrebounded West Carter 36-30. West Carter was four of 18 from the three point line while Whitesburg only connected on one of seven shots beyond the arc. The victors were led by Megen Gearhart and Brooke Mullis with 21 and 11 points respectively. Whitesburg was led by Chastity Fox and Ashley Stidham with 16 points each. Stidham also pulled down 11 rebounds. Whitney Hogg added six points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. Camille Cook chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Newport Central Catholic led 25-18 at halftime and increased their margin to double digits in the third quarter on their way to a 58-42 victory over Washington County. Newport Central Catholic held a 39.2%-33.3% edge in field goal shooting and held a 15-0 advantage from beyond the three point arc. Newport Central Catholic was led by Jayme Thiem, Jenny Prigge, Heather Maudlin, and Nicole Chiodi with 17, 13, 11, and 10 points respectively. Washington County was led by Katie Filiatreau and 5-9 Fr. Brittany Edelen with 16 and 10 points respectively.

Betsy Layne was led by Kim Clark and Natasha Stratton with 21 and nine points respectively.

Jackson County’s Sarah Elliott blocked the first four shots Whitesville Trinity attempted and Jackson County held a 41.7%-25% edge in field goal shooting on their way to a 59-40 victory. Jackson County also held a 49-33 advantage on the boards. Jackson County was led by Sarah Elliott with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and nine blocked shots. Jeannena Hignite tied Elliott for the scoring lead with 19 points. Whitesville Trinity was led by Lauren Mattingly with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah McDaniel added 10 points.

Lexington Christian Academy shot 56% from the field and led 28-22 at the intermission. However, they could only manage 27.3% in the second half, and Mayfield rallied for a 49-41 victory. Mayfield held a slight 42.5%-42.2% edge in field goal shooting and enjoyed a 32-21 margin on the boards. Mayfield was 13 of 19 from the free throw line while LCA only visited the charity line three times going zero for three. Mayfield was led by Jan Dodson with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Lexington Christian Academy was led by Elisabeth Jones and Emily London with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Jenn Skaggs added 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Tiffany Reid added 12 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Somerset was led by Amy Honeycutt with 16 points. 5-7 So. Madison Flowers added 12 points.

Neither team shot well from the field with Bishop Brossart shooting 33.3% and Owen County only connecting at a 29.5% rate. Bishop Brossart was 11 of 18 from the free throw line while Owen County could only manage four of 14 from the charity stripe. The victors were led by Casey Geiman with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Owen County was led by Katie Smith with 11 points.

Newport Central Catholic’s Jayme Thiem scored on a driving layup with less than ten seconds remaining on the clock to take a 52-51 victory over West Carter. West Carter had one last chance but a layup at the buzzer rolled off the rim. Newport Central Catholic shot 38.82% from the field, was 13 of 19 from the free throw line, and captured 33 rebounds. West Carter shot 45.8% from the field, was five of seven from the charity stripe, and had 28 rebounds. Newport Central Catholic was led by Jayme Thiem and Nichole Chiodi with 16 and 15 points respectively. West Carter was led by Megen Gearhart and Brooke Mullis with 17 and 13 points respectively. Mullis also pulled down eight rebounds.

Jackson County was led by Sarah Elliott with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Jeannena Hignite added 17 points and eight rebounds. Christian Academy was led by Meredith Marsh with 18 points on a tourney record-tying six three point baskets, including four in the final period. Nikki Thompson and Kristi Beougher added 14 and 10 points respectively. Beougher pulled down 13 rebounds.

Teri Rogers added nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

The victors were led by Sarah Elliott with 32 points, 20 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Whitney Moore and Brittany Bingham added 13 and 11 points respectively. Newport Central Catholic was led by Nicole Chiodi with 20 points and nine assists. Heather Maudlin and Jenny Prigge added 14 points each.

Clinton County continued their excellent defense this week, holding Jackson County to three of 19 from the field in the second half on their way to a 49-30 victory and the All “A” Classic Championship. Clinton County held a 45.9%-28.2% edge in field goal shooting and was 50% (five of 10) from the three point line. Clinton County was led today by Brittany Abbott with 15 points, including three three point baskets. Amber Guffey added 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Paige Guffey and Angela Brown added nine and eight points respectively, while Brown pulled down 10 rebounds. Sarah Elliott led Jackson County with 12 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots. Brittany Bingham added nine points.

Conclusion
Dave Cantrall’s All ‘A’ rankings which appeared in the Lexington
Herald-Leader on February 5th had Clinton County firmly
entrenched in the number one position.
The Lady Bulldogs won the prestigious Pickerington Tournament in Ohio
and came into this tourney on an eleven game winning streak. They continued on their hot streak this
week, utilizing both inside and outside scoring and a stingy defense. Jackson County’s Sarah Elliott
had an excellent tourney and was named tourney MVP. There were thirteen members of the all-tournament team with
the following breakdown: seven
seniors, two juniors, and four sophs.
