This was another excellent day of basketball in the ‘ville. There was an MVP named for each game with an overall MVP chosen for the day. The ladies chosen for these awards were: Game 1 MVP – Charlotte Marshall (Shelby County), Game 2 MVP – Leslye Johnson (Mercer County), Game 3 was cancelled, Game 4 MVP – Jenn Skaggs (Louisville Holy Cross), Game 5 MVP – Tracy Harbut (Bryan Station), Game 6 MVP – Chelsea Chowning (Lexington Catholic), Game 7 MVP – Jade Perry (Muhlenberg North), and Crystal Kelly (Sacred Heart), Game 8 MVP – Chelsia Lymon (Scott County), and overall MVP Charlotte Marshall (Shelby County).
The Eighth Region should really be interesting come tourney time. Shelby County is quietly establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the state and Scott County is young and improving with every game. The Eleventh Region is in the same situation with the established Lexington Catholic squad being the favorite, but several teams including a young but talented Bryan Station team stand ready to challenge. Watch out for Mercer County in the Twelfth Region – they can shoot the ball.
Sacred Heart is adjusting to the loss of Krisha Byron for the season but they are still number one and it will take a top effort to knock them off the top rung. I would still keep an eye out for Mercy Academy. They have lost a few games and have suffered through illness and injuries but coach Mark Evans will keep this team poised for a major upset down the road. Louisville, as usual, is loaded and both the Sixth and Seventh Regions have several teams capable of springing upsets. Cawood and Louisville Butler would have an interesting matchup, with Cawood featuring Savanna Wynn and Butler led by Jr. center Ashley Lewallen.
Congratulations to the organizers of this event and a special thanks to Bob Tonini of Sacred Heart Academy for providing me the statistics for this event. Also, be sure to read Louis Meadows’ report on this event on his website: http://members.aol.com/numberonefan4890/jan26notes.html.
