Mercy Academy coach Mark Evans started the following lineup: 6-0 Jr. Katie Willinger, 5-11 Jr. Kate Ulanowski, 5-7 Jr. Laura Rather, 5-9 Sr. Brittany Kittel, and 5-5 Sr. Lauren Parrish. Lexington Catholic coach Greg Todd countered with 6-0 Sr. Chelsea Chowning, 5-7 Jr. Megan Mendenhall, 6-1 So. Shannon Novosel, 5-11 Sr. Sarah Schell, and 5-7 Fr. Nikki Davis.
Lexington Catholic rallied late in the game to defeat Mercy by a score of 54-51. Catholic led 46-40 at the end of the third quarter but Mercy scrapped back to take a 49-48 lead with 2:33 remaining in the game. Lexington Catholic hit six of eight free throws down the stretch to earn the victory. This was a game of turnovers as Mercy committed 29 turnovers and Lexington Catholic was guilty of 26 miscues. Mercy shot 42% from the field and Lexington Catholic shot 37.7% from the floor. Each team recorded 16 steals for the game.
Lexington Catholic was led tonight by 5-7 So. Lesley Server who came off the bench to tally 16 points. Chelsea Chowning added 11 points and eight rebounds. Sarah Schell added nine points, six rebounds, six assists, four blocked shots, and recorded five steals. Shannon Novosel added eight points, eight rebounds, and hit two key free throws down the stretch. Mercy was led tonight by Katie Willinger with 11 points and 11 rebounds. 5-7 Sr. Sarah Darnell came off the bench and game an excellent effort with 10 points and five steals. Brittany Kittel, Laura Rather, and Lauren Parrish added nine, eight, and eight points respectively.
This was an exciting game between two of the top programs in the state. Both teams were guilty of lots of turnovers tonight, both forced and unforced. Both teams are deep and talented and will only get better as the season progresses. The Jaguars and Lady Knights both have challenging schedules which should prove beneficial at tournament time.
