Conclusion

Congratulations to all the teams and players who participated in this outstanding event.  This report is meant to be a representative sampling, and names and stats were hurriedly gathered as I moved from court to court.  I apologize for missed games and/or inaccuracies copying from the scorebooks, but the numbers should be close.

Congratulations to Pleasure Ridge Park—they had a tough draw defeating Lexington Catholic, Scott County, and West Jessamine to claim the championship.  This could be a very special team even by PRP standards.  Coach Mabrey has a lot of weapons at this disposal.  Jujuan Spillman is jet-quick and is the latest in a long line of great PRP point guards.  6-9 Terrance Farley gives them rebounding and is a defensive stopper.  Donte Sweatt, Maurice Blakey, Carlos Williams, etc. add scoring and rebounding.  The rich could get richer if Kevin James is fully recovered from injuries by the start of the season.  West Jessamine is—I repeat—not a fluke.  They have size, depth, and the talent to go a long way this year.  Brett Johnson, Joey Searle, and Scott Tarvin had excellent tourneys and Coach Yates has done a great job with this squad.

Scott County had some key losses to graduation but Billy Hicks doesn’t rebuild, he merely reloads.  Scott County has missed the big dance the last two years and Coach Hicks is fine tuning the Cardinal machine for a return to March Madness.  The Cards always play defense, have size and shooting, an experienced point guard in Tyler Hicks, and are getting very consistent performances from 6-3 Sr. Jeremy Nettles in the paint.  Lexington Catholic was missing Brian Smith and Martiese Morones and are getting used to a new coach.  Make no mistake—Bart Flener can coach and Catholic has the horses returning to challenge for the title again this year.

Highlands defeated PRP in pool play, and 6-8 Sr. Ross Neltner displayed some nifty post moves as well as once again proving he is one of the best passing big men around.  Henry Clay has the ballhandler (Lamont Campbell), shooter (Joe Harden), as well as some nice athletes that could make them dangerous.  The 11th Region should be tough this year as Tates Creek has a lot of talent returning and Lafayette, Dunbar, Frankfort, and Madison Central all can play.

6-9 Andrew Preston played well for Clark County.  Clay County is young but dangerous.  Corbin has all the components to threaten for the region championship.  Jackson County has a lot of young talent and could be tough by tourney time.  Coach Rodney Woods has another fine team at Wayne County.  Michael Hall shot the ball extremely well for South Floyd.  Joe White played well for Mercer County, and Trinity has some young players who will get after you on defense.  Warren Central has some athletes who should carry them to an excellent season.  It is impossible to mention every team and all the fine players but it is obvious that the 2002-2003 season should be interesting and top teams like Ballard, Male, North Hardin, etc. did not participate in this event.

Sacred Heart just keeps rolling along as they defeated a very good Lexington Catholic squad for the championship.  Coach Donna Moir was missing Becca Kopple due to an injury but Crystal Kelly, Krisha Byron, Carly Ormerod, Taylor Kopple, and company got the job done.  Lexington Catholic has the duo of Sarah Schell and Chelsea Chowning plus a very solid supporting cast and some talented newcomers.  They also should return another weapon in guard Regina Carney who is rehabbing from an ACL injury.  Shannon Novosel gave them a force in the paint and Lesley Server and Megan Mendenhall add outside shooting.

Clinton County has a strong post player in Angela Brown, and the trio of Paige Guffey, Amber Guffey, and Brittany Abbott provide a lot of offense.  5-10 Stacy Ross transferred from McCreary Central, giving them an experienced wing player who also helps with rebounding and interior defense.  Watch for Newport Catholic to make some noise this year and they will only improve.  Wayne County turns every game into a defensive struggle and Ashley Bell, who transferred from Monticello to Wayne County last season, was very impressive.  Bryan Station has an excellent group of young players to go with Tracy Harbut this season.  Manual should have an excellent season with Candyce Bingham, Sarah McKemie, Maggie McKemie, etc.  West Carter lost some key players from last season and are trying to cope with the illness of their well-respected coach John “Hop” Brown.  They return Megen Gearhart, Steph Hall, Brooke Mullis (recovering from an injury), Brandi Rayburn, etc.  Miss Gearhart has won just about every honor available during her remarkable career and should be a leading candidate for Miss Basketball.  Woodford County returns most of their players from last year’s 11th Region championship team including Destiny Mattingly.  Lafayette will be improved this year and should be led by 6-4 Sr. Kara Hamilton plus some exciting young players.

There were too many teams and players to mention them all here but there were several excellent players here and some teams that will be a threat in their regions.  Leslie County was hampered during this tourney by the absence of Heather Benton who suffered an ACL injury.  Hopefully, Miss Benton and all the players on the injured list will be fully recovered by the start of the season.
