MVP

Conclusion

This was an excellent tournament, well attended, and two underdogs battling for the championship.  Congratulations to Coach Jay Lucas and his Woodford County team and also to Coach Kent Miller and Madison Central.  Henry Clay lost a heartbreaker in the semifinal to Woodford County but Coach Scott Cromwell was gracious in defeat reminding his team what a great season they had.  Lexington Catholic could not find their shooting eye and it finally caught up with them.  Sharia Young gutted out an injury and laced up her sneakers one last time for her Bryan Station Lady Defenders.  Nastassia Alcius and Katie Columbus played their last game for Henry Clay – they will be missed.  Lexington Christian Academy loses the duo of Jenny Noort and Staci Feck – they will be hard to replace.  Lexington Christian Academy’s Caryn Cooper missed the season due to an injury but it was a heart-warming minute seeing her score a basket in the final seconds in a cameo appearance.

The future should be bright for the 11th Region.  Nine of the twelve girls named to the regular season All-11th Region squad will return in 2002-2003 and ten of thirteen girls named to the All-Tournament squad will return.  Many of the young stars have bright futures and several should play at the college level.  Destiny Mattingly (Woodford County), Olivia Terry (Madison Central), Shannon Novosel (Lexington Catholic), Mary Tobin (Henry Clay), Johnna Carlisle (Henry Clay), etc. are players to watch in the future.  Coach Jackie Williams started three 8th graders (Bradli Stinson, Crystal Leach, and Carley Blankenship) at Bryan Station and they can play.

There are probably larger and faster teams around than Woodford County, but you can’t measure heart and determination.  Coach Jay Lucas preached the refuse-to-lose mentality and at times seemed to will them to stay in games.  The aptly named Destiny as in Destiny Mattingly was named tourney MVP.  Mallory Kirtley is like the famed energizer bunny.  She just keeps on going and is always around the ball.  Laura Swan provided some excellent play in the paint and gave Woodford County an inside force in the tournament.  Woodford County had several players who stepped up and provided quality minutes during their championship run.

Acknowledgements

A special thanks to Bryan Station athletic director Susan Montgomery for the hospitality extended me during the season and tournament.  Ms Montgomery is a longtime and loyal supporter of girls basketball and it was only fitting that this excellent and very exciting event was held in her house.  Also a special thanks to the WL Stats crew for providing the computerized stats for each game – nobody does it better.  I deeply appreciate the coaches who have taken the time and patience to educate me on the girls game.
