Lexington, Kentucky
June 14-16, 2001

This tournament was played from June 14th through June 16th in Lexington Kentucky, with the majority of the games being played at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington Kentucky. The Academy has five regulation basketball courts and is tailor-made for this type of event.
This should be a very interesting tournament with many outstanding players. The Boys 15 & Under had 24 teams pre-registered to compete: Simon Kenton, Fairdale, Breathitt County, Lexington Catholic, PRP, Western Hills, Hopkins Central, Dunbar, Franklin County, Boyle County, Lynn Camp, Madison Central, Shelby County, Frankfort, Mercer County, Lexington Christian, Male, Lafayette, Scott County, Danville, Tates Creek, St. Xavier, Highlands, and Corbin. Lexington Catholic would appear to be a strong favorite, with Demetrius Green, William Graham, Harrison Morton, etc. leading the way for coach Brandon Salsman.
The Girls 14 & Under had 12 teams entered: Eastern Ky. Starz, Lexington Lady Diamonds, Western Ky. Lady Dominators, Jenkins, Henderson County, S. Ky. Sharpshooters, Central Ky. (Liberty), Whitesburg, Central Ky. Sharks, Shelby Valley, DC Dragons, and Harlan County. Liberty replaced Lexington Catholic and will not be eligible for the championship. The S. Ky. Sharpshooters will be led by the outside threat of Paige and Amber Guffey.
I managed to view several excellent games and many fine players but unfortunately you can't observe every game. I will attempt to give a brief recap of the games I did see and apologize for the games and players I missed in the tournament. The stats are a combination of stats from the scorebook and ones recorded by me personally.

Conclusion
Congratulations to Lexington Catholic and the S. Ky. Sharpshooters for their respective championships. This was an excellent tournament with many fine players. Demetrius Green, Harrison Morton, and William Graham had excellent tourneys for Catholic. Tyler Hicks, despite being hampered with foul problems, had a good tourney for Scott County. Shawn Ballard is a future star at Madison Central and St. Xavier displayed a nice inside-outside duo with Nick Redmond and Robby Shaefer . Steve McKinney, who came up through the Team Louisville AAU system, played well for Male. Joseph Mahan and Ryan Maguet provided good outside shooting for Corbin, and Lafayette may have a good one in Marcus Barron.
Hopkins Central had a nice run in the tourney and Justin Taylor of Tates Creek made an impression with the fans. PRP, as usual, has some good athletes and 6-7 soph-to-be Terrance Farley could be special before he graduates.
The S. Ky. Sharpshooters were led by the long range bombing of Paige and Amber Guffey. Savanna Wynn consistently put up big numbers for Harlan County. I was also impressed with the play of Lexington Lady Diamond's Mary Tobin. Mary is 6-0 and a soph-to-be at Henry Clay. She is a rugged inside player who hits the boards well. She has also improved her ball handling skills and added range to her jump shot. She should be a very valuable member of Scott Cromwell's Lady Blue Devil squad this year. Johnna Carlisle, another Lady Blue Devil, played well for the Diamonds, and Brittney Pittman also made the all-tourney squad.

A special thanks to the Mills family and to Ken Farley for all the help. I also greatly appreciate the hospitality afforded me by the staff of the Kentucky Basketball Academy. The coaches and parents, as usual, were very helpful in providing me with info about their teams. A special thanks to Shannon and Staci Feck, and Shawna Toy, for their insights on the games. These young ladies understand the game and are great ambassadors for girls basketball.
