Coach Joe Pat Covington's Tates Creek Commodores were no match for Henry Clay as the Blue Devils won by a score of  70-51.   Kirk Chiles' team was led by the trio of 5-5 So. Lamont Campbell, 6-6 Jr. Clay List, and 6-2 Sr. Rod Dunham with 17, 16 and 15 points respectively.  Tates Creek was led tonight by Jr. Brad Schueler with 19 points and 6-0 Fr. Justin Taylor added 11 points.

Lamont Campbell, and 5-11 Sr. Chris Jones.  Bryan Station coach Bobby Washington countered with 6-0 Sr. Brian Carpenter, 6-6 Sr. Terren Harbut, 6-4 Sr. Waltclaire Flynn, 5-8 Sr. Scotty Ferguson , and 6-4 Jr. David Kryscio.

Bryan Station utilized 61.1% field goal shooting and a 37-28 edge in rebounding to defeat  Henry Clay by a score of  77-59.  Bryan Station was led by Brian Carpenter with 29 points and 8 rebounds. Terren Harbut chipped in with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Scotty Ferguson and Waltclaire Flynn each added 14 points.  Henry Clay was led by Clay List with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Rod Dunham added 17 points

Lafayette coach Don Adkins started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Robert Madison, 6-6 Sr. Dudley Hall, 6-7 Sr. Vernard Hazard, 5-9 Sr. James Gentry, and 6-0 Sr. Quinton Roberts.  Paul Dunbar coach Eddie Oakley countered with 6-4 Sr. Rod Lyvers, 6-3 Sr. David Byars, 6-6 Jr. Kenneth Fox, 6-3 Sr. Clay Tate, and 6-0 So. Marcus Conner.

Lafayette pulled away from a 48-48 tie at the end of three quarters to defeat Dunbar by a score of  73-68.  Lafayette shot 65.9% from the field including an eye-popping 81% in the second half.  Lafayette was led tonight by James Gentry with 20 points.  Vernard Hazard added 15 points, with 11 points coming in the final period. Quinton Roberts added 13 points and 10 assists.  Dunbar was led tonight by David Byars with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Kenneth Fox added 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Girls Championship  Bryan Station (18-8) vs. Henry Clay (24-3)   Mar. 3rd

Bryan Station coach Jackie Williams started the following lineup:  6-0 So. Tracy Harbut, 5-8 Jr. Sharia Young,  5-9 Jr. Ashlee Crump , 5-9 Jr. Mimi  Combs, and Sr. Shamea Skinner.  Henry Clay coach Scott Cromwell countered with 5-3 Fr. Johnna Carlisle, 6-0 So. Leah Hill, 5-9 Jr. Katie Columbus, 5-10 Sr. Freddricka Embry, and 5-7 Jr. Nastassia Alcius.

Henry Clay had to overcome an early offensive explosion to claw back for a hard-earned 68-58 victory.  Bryan Station led 25-10 early in the second quarter before Henry Clay went on a 23-7 run to take a 33-32 lead at halftime.  The score was tied 47-47 at the end of three quarters and remained close until Henry Clay scored 10 of the last 12 points of the game to secure the victory.  Henry Clay was led tonight by Nastassia Alcius with 27 points. Johnna Carlisle and tourney MVP Freddricka Embry each added 13 points with Embry pulling down 11 rebounds.  Bryan Station was led by Sharia Young and Tracy Harbut with 24 and 19 points respectively. Mimi  Combs added 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Lafayette pulled away in the final minutes of the final period to claim the 43rd district championship by a score of  61-53.  Lafayette was led tonight by Robert Madison with 20 points.   Vernard Hazard added 13 points and was named tourney MVP.  Dudley Hall added 9 points and 10 rebounds.  Bryan Station was led by Brian Carpenter with 15 points.  Scotty Ferguson added 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Terren Harbut was held to 6 points but pulled down 10 rebounds.

Conclusion

Congratulations to the Lafayette men and Henry Clay women for their district titles.  It was an excellent week of basketball played before overflowing crowds at Bryan Station High School.  I was only able to attend one girls game which was my loss because in that game I saw some excellent basketball and several young ladies who will be playing ball at the next level.  Both Henry Clay and Bryan Station advance to the 11th region tournament and very well could meet again.

Lafayette always had the perimeter game but needed to develop an inside game.  6-6 Sr. Dudley Hall and 6-7 Sr. Vernard Hazard were up to the task in the tournament, with Hazard being named MVP.  Bryan Station also advances to the 11th region tournament.  Harbut, Carpenter, and Flynn have received most of the publicity but don't forget 5-8 Sr. Scotty Ferguson -- a very underrated point guard who fuels the Defender engine.
