Madison Central (19-7) vs. Scott County (21-4) February 23, 2001
Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus, Jr. started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Eric Broomfield, 6-0 Sr. Nick Stephens, 6-4 Sr. Joe Cornett, 6-4 Fr. Shawn Ballard and 6-2 Sr. Josh Land. Scott County coach Billy Hicks countered with 6-3 Jr. Coy Zerhusen, 5-8 So. Nick Reed, 6-8 Sr. Nate Austin, 5-9 Jr. ”C-3” Brown, and 5-11 Fr. Tyler Hicks.
Madison Central held on to win a 75-70 thriller over Scott County tonight. Madison Central outscored Scott County 30-10 in the second quarter to take a 45-29 lead at halftime. Madison Central shot 57.1% from the field in the first half and was led by Josh Land and Shawn Ballard with 13 and 11 points respectively. Scott Co. cut into the lead in the third period and closed to 53-48 at the end of the quarter. Scott Co. made another run in the fourth quarter and actually pulled within 2, 69-67, on a Tyler Hicks basket with 1:01 remaining on the clock. However, Madison Central hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Madison Central was led tonight by 6-3 Sr. Eric Broomfield with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Shawn Ballard and Josh Land added 18 and 17 points respectively. 5-11 Sr. Ben Stephens came off the bench to tally 11 points and 9 rebounds. Scott Co. was led by Coy Zerhusen with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Nate Austin, despite being hampered with foul problems, added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Hicks also chipped in with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
This was a very significant win for Madison Central as Scott Co. has
been the Achilles heel for Central the last three seasons. Madison
Central also has a big win over Lexington Catholic and Coach Feldhaus has
his team clicking on all cylinders heading into tourney play. Scott
Co. also has lost a couple of late season games but that only makes Billy
Hicks' team more dangerous. Coach Hicks does not like to lose and
Scott Co. is not used to losing -- watch for them to come back with a vengeance.
Also, a special thanks to the Madison Central stats crew who provided me
with the stats for this game.
