First year Bullitt Central High School coach James Hurley has put together an exciting day of basketball with five scrimmage games on the slate.  The schedule is as follows:

1:30

North Bullitt vs. Louisville Seneca

3:00

Louisville Iroquois vs. Warren Central

4:30

Louisville Fairdale vs. Walnut Hills (OH)

6:00

Bullitt Central vs. LaRue County

7:30

Louisville Moore vs. Paducah Tilghman

Some of the top players expected to see action today are Carlos Hurt (Moore), Anthony Johnson (Iroquois), Coric Riggs (Fairdale), and Brett Jones (Paducah Tilghman).   Carlos Hurt transferred in from Texas and the 6-2 guard immediately moved to top consideration for Mr. Basketball.  Carlos is considered among the best combo guards in the nation.

Today’s games will consist of two 16-minute halves with the score being reset at the half.  I will combine the two scores for the sake of clarity and please remember that these are scrimmages.

Game No. 1 – Louisville Seneca vs. North Bullitt

The Seneca Red Hawks easily won this game by a score of 91-68.  James Clark came off the bench to lead the victors with 25 points.  6-5 Jr. Larry Williams added 23 points.  6-6 or 6-7 Fr. Robbie Simpson added 12 points and could develop into a good one.  North Bullitt was led today by Jonathan Smith with 18 and Adam Schott added 14.

Game No. 2 – Warren Central vs. Louisville Iroquois

This was a very hotly contested game and due to the unique scrimmage practice of resetting the score the final tally was 85-85.  6-5 Sr. Anthony Johnson, scoring inside and out led Iroquois with 35 points and Bobby Fuqua added 20.  Warren Central was led by 6-4½ Sr. Devin Sona, a rugged inside banger, who tallied 25 points.  Antwuan Barber, a quick 5-11 guard, added 14 points.

Game No. 3 – Walnut Hills (OH) vs. Louisville Fairdale

Fairdale proved too athletic for Walnut Hills and prevailed by a score of 53-38.  Coric Riggs, a high flying 6-4 Sr., led Fairdale with 18 points including five crowd-pleasing dunks.  Walnut Hills was led by their superb 5-10 Sr. point guard Lawrence Wilson with 20 points.

Game No. 4 – LaRue County vs. Bullitt Central

Bullitt Central played this game without the services of Jason Rheaume, Aaron Troutman, and Chad Stivers.  LaRue was also a little short-handed for tonight’s game.  Bullitt Central prevailed in a close one to win 56-51.  Bullitt Central was led tonight by 6-7 Jr. Todd Spencer with 19 points.  Jeremy Grimes led a balanced LaRue County attack with 12.

Game No. 5 – Paducah Tilghman vs. Louisville Moore

This game lived up to its hype as Tilghman “ran and gunned” their way to a 91-76 victory.  This was the coming out party for Moore’s Carlos Hurt but 6-3 Sr. Paducah Tilghman star Brett Jones stole the show with 36 points including five “three-pointers”.  The 6-2 Hurt lived up to expectations by pouring in 29 points and his running mate Petie Brown, a 6-2 Jr., added 28.  Both teams should have outstanding campaigns.

This was a very enjoyable day of hoops and a great way to whet your appetite for the regular season.  The statistics are highly unofficial – after all these are scrimmages.  There were several good players on display today from the high flying Coric Riggs to the silky smooth shooting stroke of Brett Jones.  Carlos Hurt is for real and deserves his high national ranking.  Louisville Moore also has added firepower in Petie Brown.  Coach Miller (Louisville Moore) has a couple of very tall players on the bench – 6-7½ Jr. Tasmir Ba and 6-10½  Jr. Cheikhou Ba who will need time to develop.  Iroquois’ Anthony Johnson had a good game and should have a fine senior campaign.

Congratulations and thanks to Coach Hurley for putting together this event.  Coach Hurley was an assistant at Male last year and at 24 years old is starting his career as a head coach at Bullitt Central.  If this event is an example of Coach Hurley’s work ethic, he will have a long and successful career in basketball.
